In the heart of College Station, Texas, a remarkable story of ambition and innovation is unfolding. A 16-year-old homeschool student named Evan Morrison Jr. has turned his passion for food into a buzzing reality with the launch of his food truck, Better Beef Smashburgers. This spirited young entrepreneur is already making waves by serving up delicious smash burgers, cheesesteaks, and crispy hand-cut fries from his food trailer stationed outside the iconic Ranch Harley-Davidson.
The journey to this exciting venture started a little over a year ago when Morrison Jr. approached his parents with the idea of starting his own food truck. Inspired by their hardworking entrepreneurial spirit, he was determined to make it happen. “I asked them about a year ago if I could get my own food truck,” he shared. “They told me if I used the money I had saved from working at their coffee shop, they would help me purchase a food trailer.” With unwavering support from his family, including his sister, Evan enthusiastically dove into making his dream a reality.
Setting up a business is no small feat, especially for someone so young. Better Beef Smashburgers has become a crash course in entrepreneurship for Morrison Jr. His father, Evan Morrison Sr., proudly remarked on the valuable lessons his son has been learning through the process. “He’s been learning a lot along the way—about setting up permits, handling taxes, and more.” These challenges have fostered a worldly understanding of what it takes to operate a successful business.
Despite the initial hurdles, Morrison Jr. is finding his rhythm and is optimistic about the future. He balances the rigors of being a 10th grader with the responsibilities of managing his food truck. “It’s been a little hard, but I enjoy it. We’re working on building our brand,” he explained. “I just go home and do my assignments after I’m done working the food truck.” His determination and work ethic are clear as he makes the most of his time.
The Morrison family’s unwavering encouragement has played a crucial role in Evan Jr.’s journey. “We have a holistic view of education, and this venture has been a great addition to that,” noted his father. Morrison Sr. reiterated the family’s commitment, stating, “If one of my kids comes to me with an idea, we look at how we can make it happen.” It’s heartwarming to see such a solid foundation of support fueling Evan Jr.’s entrepreneurial spirit.
Operating from Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Better Beef Smashburgers has plans to expand even further, with additional pop-ups at Four Downs Sports Bar on Saturday nights. The family sees a bright future ahead as they build their brand in the community. “It means a lot because I wouldn’t be able to do this without them,” Evan Jr. expressed. “They showed me everything about business, and they’ve always told me—if you want to do it, you can do it.”
As College Station embraces Evan Jr.’s delicious creations, it serves as a testament to the power of dreams, hard work, and family support. In a world where children often feel uncertain about their futures, Morrison Jr. stands out as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring young entrepreneurs everywhere. Here’s to hoping that Better Beef Smashburgers thrives and that Evan Jr. continues to achieve great things in and out of the kitchen!
