The 28th annual Doc Hess Classic in Bryan and College Station showcased remarkable wrestling talent with local athletes excelling in their respective divisions. Katelynn Dockery and Nadiyah Elizondo earned gold medals, while other performers like Nate Surley and John Humphries also delivered impressive results. The event fostered a spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork, and anticipation builds as teams prepare for upcoming tournaments.
In the vibrant cities of Bryan and College Station, the excitement of wrestling was palpable as local teams showcased their talent at the 28th annual Doc Hess Classic held at the Legends Event Center. This event brought in fierce competition and much fanfare, and our young athletes did not disappoint.
Among the standout performers were two remarkable wrestlers from our community. Katelynn Dockery, a spirited freshman from Bryan, achieved a first-place finish in the girls’ 107-pound division. Dockery faced intense challenges, culminating in a nail-biting match against senior Chloe Hanes from Klein Oak for the championship. Her journey to glory included a successful series of matches that began with a first-round bye, followed by thrilling victories over Killeen Chaparral’s Mikayla Hudson, Cypress Springs’ Amanda Alvarado, and Klein Collins’ Kamryn Quinn in the semifinals.
Simultaneously, in a display of grit and determination, Nadiyah Elizondo from College Station triumphed in the girls’ 126-pound division. Also starting with a bye, Elizondo showcased her prowess as she battled her way to the finals, defeating Buda Johnson’s Cire’ Anderson, Comal Canyon’s Su’Nae Burden, and Hutto’s Abigail Gallardo along the way before clinching victory against Georgetown’s Yurianna Lippinghoff.
The success didn’t end there! Making an impressive mark, College Station sophomore Allayjia Bolden secured a fourth-place finish in the girls’ 100-pound division, contributing to the team’s overall achievements alongside Dockery and Elizondo.
On the boys’ side, while there were several commendable performances, no first-place finishes were recorded, yet the spirit remained high. Bryan senior Nate Surley captured the runner-up spot in the 285-pound division, feeling that his second-place finish held greater significance this year compared to the previous one. His hard-fought battles in the ring truly exemplified his dedication.
Another notable performance came from College Station junior John Humphries, who also placed second in the 165-pound A classification. His journey concluded in a challenging final match against Comal Canyon’s Calel Johnson. Additionally, College Station junior Fabian Cruz earned a fourth-place finish in the 113-pound division to round out an impressive showing from the local teams.
With the Doc Hess Classic wrapped up, the excitement continues as both Bryan and College Station prepare for their next competitive challenge at the CFISD tournament on January 3-4. Meanwhile, Rudder will be heading to the Cy-Fair Invite on January 6-7, and A&M Consolidated is set to participate in a quad tournament at Bryan on January 8.
Overall, the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork was alive and well at the Doc Hess Classic. As our local wrestlers continue to train and compete, there’s no doubt that we’ll see more remarkable feats from them in the future. Stay tuned for further updates on their journey!
