Exciting Changes on the Way for Wellborn Road in College Station!
Hey there, College Station! Big news is bubbling up in our corner of Texas as the Texas Department of Transportation, together with the good folks at the City of College Station and the Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization, are rolling out a plan to give Wellborn Road a major facelift.
What’s Happening?
Starting soon, Wellborn Road is set to be expanded from its current two-lane setup to a bustling four-lane roadway, stretching from William D. Fitch Parkway to Greens Prairie Road. Yes, you heard that right—two new lanes in each direction, plus a raised median and designated left turn lanes at certain intersections!
Mark Your Calendars for the Community Meeting!
Curious residents are invited to get all the juicy details at an in-person meeting happening on Thursday, November 21, 2024. Stop by between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Wellborn Middle School, located at 15510 Royder Road in College Station. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the project, voice your thoughts, and understand how it might impact your daily commute!
What Will the Project Include?
The proposed makeover of Wellborn Road isn’t just about new lanes; it’s about improving safety and accessibility. The project will boast:
- A traffic signal at the busy intersection with McCullough Road
- New curb and gutter installations to help with drainage
- A dedicated shared-use path along the east side, great for joggers, cyclists, and anyone who loves using their feet!
This newly proposed project is approximately 2.7 miles long, which means a hefty upgrade for this stretch of road that many of us frequent.
What Does it Mean for Residents?
Now, with great progress comes some tough decisions. In order to make this expansion happen, about 7.4 acres of additional right of way will be needed, which might impact some local properties. Unfortunately, it could mean displacing one home and three non-residential buildings in the process.
Don’t worry, though! For those affected, the TxDOT Relocation Assistance Program will be available to lend a helping hand. They’ll provide support, services, and benefits tailored for those who might need to move. Interested parties can get more information about this program by reaching out to the TxDOT district office at (979) 778-9607, or swing by the meeting on the 21st for all the details you need.
What’s Next?
As the wheels of progress start turning, the tentative schedule for right-of-way acquisition and construction will be discussed further at the meeting, so come with your questions!
So, College Station, let’s gear up for some exciting changes that will surely make our daily drives smoother and safer. See you at the meeting!
