As Bryan faces frigid winter temperatures, a new overnight warming center has opened at the First Methodist Church to provide shelter and comfort to those in need. Operational on Wednesday and Thursday nights, the center welcomes individuals and families struggling to keep warm. Volunteers are urgently needed for assistance with guest check-ins and snack distribution. The initiative, supported by local community organizations, aims to foster solidarity and ensure that everyone has a safe place to escape the cold.
As temperatures drop and winter’s chill settles in, the city of Bryan is taking action to support its community during these unbearably cold nights. This week, an overnight warming center opens its doors at the First Methodist Church, located at 506 E. 26th Street. The initiative is a beacon of hope for anyone in need of a warm, safe place to stay.
The center will be operational on Wednesday and Thursday nights, providing warmth and comfort from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. each night. This is not just for those experiencing homelessness; families and individuals who are struggling to keep their homes warm due to financial challenges are equally welcome. The center aims to ensure that everyone has a chance to escape the biting cold.
Here’s where we need your help, Bryan! The warming center is in urgent need of volunteers to help with various tasks. If you have a heart for service, consider stepping up to assist your neighbors in need. Volunteer duties will include checking in guests, as well as distributing snacks and water. It’s a great opportunity to get involved, show support, and bring some warmth to the cold.
Multiple volunteer shifts are available each night, making it easy for you to help out even if you have other obligations. As of now, there is a specific need for volunteers on Thursday morning from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m.. So, whether you can spare a few hours or the whole night, your effort can make a big difference!
Getting involved is simple. Interested volunteers can sign up online via a designated website, or by scanning a QR code posted around town. If you prefer to talk to someone, feel free to call 979-329-8811 for assistance. For any general inquiries, just dial 211, and they will point you in the right direction.
This wonderful initiative is made possible by the hard work and collaboration of local service organizations. The Brazos Valley Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) sponsors the warming center. VOAD includes a network of 20 community service organizations that are devoted to addressing local needs. Their proactive approach has led to this successful opening, which stemmed from discussions among 11 collaborating service agencies.
While it’s easy to overlook those less fortunate during harsh weather, organizations behind the warming center emphasize the importance of coming together as a community. Your participation can help change lives for the better during this challenging time. No one should have to face the cold alone.
As Bryan gears up for these chilly nights, remember that your involvement can keep the spirit of warmth alive in our community. Every hand helps, every hour counts, and your kindness can bring comfort to those who need it the most. So, rally your friends, spread the word, and let’s show the true meaning of community support this winter!
