In the heart of Waco, Texas, one enterprising student is shaking up the way we think about college jobs and community service. Meet Zach Miller, a Texas A&M Aggie and Southlake native, who identified a gap in the market: an app that helps students find jobs while assisting local homeowners in need of help around the house. His innovative idea gave birth to an exciting new platform called Spare Hand Students.
The inspiration for Spare Hand Students struck when Zach was chatting with his parents about cleaning the house one day. “My mom asked who wanted to help out, and my dad and I just exchanged looks and said, ‘Not us!’” he chuckled. “That’s when I thought, wouldn’t it be great if there was an app to connect people wanting to get their homes cleaned with college students looking for work?”
Realizing the potential, Zach teamed up with his dad to turn this idea into a reality. They took it a step further by exclusively targeting college students: “It’s tough enough for us students to juggle classes and work, so we decided to create something that helps us get jobs while also providing affordable, convenient help to local homeowners,” he explained.
And just like that, Spare Hand Students was born! Initially launched in Bryan-College Station, the app quickly connected fellow Aggies and Blinn College students with local tasks. It soon expanded to Lubbock, where Texas Tech students jumped on board, and now, Waco has officially become the third location, welcoming students from Baylor, MCC, and TSTC.
“The response has been overwhelmingly positive!” Zach shared enthusiastically. “Customers love the idea of supporting the local community and helping students who may need to cover their expenses, whether that’s gas, books, or just day-to-day costs.”
With Spare Hand Students, Zach recently celebrated some exciting milestones: over 1500 jobs completed, nearly 3500 customers signed up, and around 1500 students ready to work! This proves that the demand for this app is real and growing, as it effectively serves the needs of both sides.
But why stop there? Zach has big dreams for Spare Hand Students: “I hate to say it, but we’re eyeing Austin next! It’s such a large city with multiple colleges and campuses, making it a prime location to expand our reach.” He believes there’s a rich community waiting to benefit from the app in that area.
The beauty of Spare Hand Students lies not just in the jobs created for students but also in the connection fostered within communities. For Zach, it’s about more than just completing tasks; it’s about bringing people together. “We want homeowners to feel good about getting help from local students and students to feel proud knowing they are making a difference,” he noted.
The app is simple to use and available for download on both Apple and Android phones. It provides an easy, convenient way for homeowners to request services, from cleaning to various odd jobs, while offering students much-needed flexibility and opportunities.
So, whether you’re a Baylor Bear in Waco needing some quick help or a college student looking to make some extra cash, Spare Hand Students is the app you’ve been waiting for! With big dreams on the horizon and a wonderful concept that brings the community together, Zach Miller is certainly someone to watch in the world of student entrepreneurship.
As the app continues to grow, who knows what exciting innovations might be next for this budding entrepreneur? One thing is for sure, this young innovator is just getting started!
