Exciting Changes Coming to Veterans Park in College Station!

Big things are happening in College Station as the city council has just awarded a hefty contract of $1.3 million to replace the artificial turf on two beloved soccer fields at Veterans Park. This decision was made during the council’s meeting on December 12, 2024, and it marks a significant investment in the community’s sporting landscape!

Time for a Turf Upgrade

The old turf, which has been in place for about 12 years, has certainly seen better days. With a life expectancy of just 8 to 10 years, it’s time for a refresh. Soccer enthusiasts and families who frequent Veterans Park can look forward to a brand new playing surface that will undoubtedly enhance their experience.

But that’s not all! The city manager, Bryan Woods, shared that some of the 200,000 square feet of the old turf won’t be going to waste. In a creative twist, it will be repurposed for batting cages and even the shooting range used by the College Station police department. Talk about making the most out of resources!

Keeping Things Cool

Parents and players will be especially pleased to hear that the new turf comes with some seriously impressive features. The material used in the new installation is designed to keep the playing surface 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the previous turf! This could make a world of difference during those hot summer games when players are most likely to be affected by the heat.

What’s New on the Airwaves?

Switching gears, let’s talk about some music to celebrate! A brand new radio station called Magic 97.3 has hit the airwaves in nearby Bryan, Texas. Launched on January 2, 2025, this station promises to bring the smooth sounds of R&B and throwbacks to listeners’ ears.

Get ready to groove along to tunes from iconic artists like Mary J. Blige, Usher, and Aaliyah. The station will also feature the popular Steve Harvey Morning Show, starting January 13. That’s right; mornings just got a whole lot better!

Magic 97.3 isn’t just about the music; they aim to connect with the community and shine a light on local issues. Catch them on 97.3 FM or 1510 AM, and don’t forget, you can also stream live at mymagic973.com!

Concerns in the Community

While exciting things are on the horizon, the community is also facing some challenges. A 20-year-old Bryan man, Frederick Hall III, has been arrested for the 15th time since April 2023. His recent run-ins with the law include various misdemeanors like underage possession of a nicotine vaping device.

Hall also had a warrant for failing to pay fines for parking in a handicapped area. Records indicate he was released on New Year’s Day after settling fines amounting to $1,097.20. He is set to appear in College Station municipal court for the underage possession charge and is currently awaiting trials for several other misdemeanor charges stemming from arrests between April and November 2024.

Looking Out for Safety

In other local news, Bryan firefighter Chris Lamb took the time to discuss vital topics concerning the community during an appearance on WTAW’s The Infomaniacs on January 2, 2025. He shared insights on lithium battery safety and ambulance response times, both of which are crucial issues for the residents to be aware of.

The Future Looks Bright

With the turf upgrade at Veterans Park and the launch of the new radio station, it’s clear that College Station and surrounding areas are buzzing with activity. Residents can look forward to cooler soccer fields, groovy music, and vital community conversations that will surely enhance their daily lives. Stay tuned, College Station—there’s a lot more excitement to come!
