The warm, sunny days of summer have taken a tumultuous turn in the Brazos Valley as Tropical Storm Beryl has made quite the entrance. This morning, the storm rolled ashore, coming in hot as a Category 1 hurricane near Sargent, TX, which is southeast of Houston. Residents are being urged to stay alert as the storm sweeps through the area, leaving behind a trail of confusion and chaos.

Weather Woes: What to Expect

If you’re thinking about venturing outdoors, you might want to think again. Heavy rainfall is in the forecast, with totals expected to exceed six inches in many areas. Coupled with wind gusts reaching speeds of more than 40 miles per hour, the storm has set the stage for some dramatic weather. Make sure your umbrellas are at the ready, but keep an eye out for flying debris!

Power Outages Rock the Community

As the winds howled and rain poured, the lights went out for thousands of locals. More than 2,400 customers in Bryan and roughly 113 in College Station found themselves in the dark thanks to wind damage. In addition to Bryan’s woes, Grimes County saw around 9,300 customers without power, and other counties didn’t fare much better—Madison County reported about 5,200 outages, Washington close to 3,000, and Leon County about 3,300 customers also left in the lurch. When all was said and done, over 2.7 million Texans state-wide were affected by power outages!

The Response

In response to the widespread outages, Bryan Texas Utility jumped into action, deploying its 20 crews to restore power as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, emergency crews are on standby, ready to dive into action when needed. City crews had even pre-staged equipment and cleared stormwater systems leading up to the storm, which has proven to be a wise move.

School’s Out!

Local students got a surprise day off when the cities of Bryan and College Station closed schools, including both Bryan ISD and College Station ISD. Alongside the school closures, student activities, summer classes, and camps were all put on hold. It looks like kids will have to find their fun elsewhere for the time being!

Businesses Shut Down

The storm didn’t hold back on affecting businesses either. The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, along with various local shops, decided to close their doors for the day. Even air travel took a hit, as four flights were canceled at Easterwood Airport due to the storm’s impact.

Getting Back on Track

The Bryan parks and recreation department announced that local aquatics facilities would be closed, along with various other summer programs. However, city workers in College Station are already on the case, actively clearing trees from roadways and sidewalks. Safety is the priority, and it shows!

Weathering the Storm

With a storm of this magnitude, there are bound to be dramatic incidents. A street sign even managed to hit a vehicle from a local station during storm coverage. Not to be outdone, an 18-wheeler was flipped over on FM 159 in Grimes County due to the ferocious winds.

With the government issuing disaster declarations for Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Washington counties, it’s clear that folks are looking out for each other.
