College Station's new traffic safety measures aim to reduce accidents and improve commuter experience.
College Station has implemented modifications to traffic signals at Texas Avenue and Harvey Mitchell Parkway to enhance driver safety. The new system limits left turn options to weekdays during peak hours, aiming to reduce accidents that previously plagued the area. Meanwhile, neighboring Bryan has made similar changes for pedestrian safety. Other community improvements include housing renovations and sidewalk expansions, demonstrating the city’s commitment to safety and infrastructure development.
College Station is making waves with some recent changes to its traffic signals, and guess what? It’s all for your safety! That’s right, folks! The city has taken a step to enhance safety and reduce accidents at the intersection of Texas Avenue and Harvey Mitchell Parkway. You know that flashing yellow light that you might see while trying to make a left turn? Well, it’s been modified to help improve your driving experience.
The modifications started rolling out back in mid-December 2025, and it seems the city is quite serious about safety. This change comes after a troubling report of 57 crashes connected to left turns from 2020 to 2024. Out of those unfortunate events, a whopping 38 occurred during off-peak hours. That’s a significant number, so it was time for a change!
To keep folks safe, the new left turn option is only available on weekdays during peak morning and afternoon commute times. Sounds like a smart move, right? Since the changes were implemented, there has only been one reported crash, which also happened during peak hours. That’s a huge win for the city and for everyone using that route!
As for the future, there’s no plan in sight to bring back that flashy yellow signal on a 24/7 basis. So for now, let’s make the most of the safer driving conditions! Plus, there are no extensions planned for modifications at other College Station intersections just yet. But who knows? As city officials review crash data, there might be more good news around the corner!
College Station isn’t the only place focused on enhancing safety; Bryan is getting in on the action too! The city has removed the flashing yellow arrow for left turns from Villa Maria to Wellborn to improve safety for left turns and protect pedestrians. It’s all about keeping our community safe!
In addition to traffic safety, College Station has wrapped up renovations for the Oak Hill apartments, a lovely 49-unit complex aimed at providing low-income housing for elderly residents. The renovations came in $393,000 under budget due to falling material prices and opting out of some optional features. The final contract price ended up at $3,000,695.50. Talk about saving some dollars! The savings have resulted in an additional $280,000 in community block grant money and $113,000 in federal housing loan funds. That money can certainly help improve the lives of many residents!
There’s more! The College Station city council has approved a sidewalk easement for a new student apartment building in the bustling Northgate district. A developer is set to construct a ten-foot sidewalk along Church Avenue, just west of Boyett Street. This will make getting around a bit easier and safer for students and residents alike.
And if that’s not enough good news, Brazos County commissioners have stepped up to allocate $1.6 million in funding to repair Leonard Road west of Highway 47. Erosion caused by Thompsons Creek has made it necessary for these improvements, and construction is set to begin shortly, lasting roughly 70 calendar days once the notice to proceed is given. Just keep an ear out for those construction sounds!
It’s been a lively exchange with some lighthearted banter among county commissioners around the approval of the budget amendment for road repairs. It’s great to see local leaders making moves to improve the community while keeping spirits high!
All in all, College Station and its surrounding areas are bustling with positive changes! From traffic signal modifications to housing renovations and infrastructure improvements, the future is looking bright. So here’s to safer roads and happy walking!
