Beware of Ticket Scams as Texas A&M Prepares for High-Stakes Showdown Against LSU

Beware of Ticket Scams as Texas A&M Faces LSU!

COLLEGE STATION, TX — Excitement is in the air as the Texas A&M Aggies prepare to face off against the LSU Tigers in what promises to be a thrilling match-up at Kyle Field this weekend. Fresh off a tough but rewarding 34-24 victory against Mississippi State, the Aggies will have the opportunity to charge into their home turf with momentum on their side. But while fans are eager to snag tickets for the game, there’s something else they need to keep in mind: ticket scams.

Scammers Target Students

As the anticipation builds for high-stakes games like this, school officials have reported a surge in online fraud related to ticket sales. According to Robert Leseth, a field training officer at the University Police Department, criminals are taking advantage of the situation by posing as legitimate sellers to trick unsuspecting students and community members into purchasing fake tickets.

“What we know is that people are targeting our students and members of our community,” Leseth explained. “They’re using student IDs and platforms like GroupMe to lure in victims.” With students desperate to secure spots for these high-demand games, they often overlook potential red flags.

The Anatomy of a Scam

So how do these scams typically work? Leseth described two common scenarios. “In one situation, someone attempts to purchase a sports pass and pays for it but never receives it. In another case, a seller transfers their pass but fails to receive payment.” The rise in these fraudulent activities is alarming, especially as the tension builds for upcoming matches against rivals like LSU and Texas.

Staying Safe While Buying Tickets

To keep everyone safe from scams, UPD officials have issued some practical advice. “Be cautious and purchase your tickets through official sources,” advised Leseth. The 12th Man Foundation and reputable sites like SeatGeek are recommended for safe ticket purchases. Meanwhile, students are advised to avoid third-party sales through less secure channels like Facebook and GroupMe.

In addition to using official ticket sources, Leseth encourages students to conduct transactions in person whenever possible. “Meeting in a safe location, like the ticket window or even the police department, can help ensure a smooth transaction,” he said. “It’s all about keeping yourself safe.”

Reporting Scams and Taking Action

If anyone does fall victim to these scams, gathering evidence is crucial. Screenshots, digital records, and usernames can help police track down suspects. “Things like handles of Venmo, usernames, and Snapchat accounts can be really beneficial to us,” Leseth added. The UPD believes that taking reports seriously can help protect the entire community.

Community Vigilance is Key

With three home games left in the season, including this high-profile SEC showdown against the Tigers, the risk of scams is likely to persist. “If something feels off, trust your instincts and contact us,” Leseth urged. “The more information we gather, the better equipped we are to handle these issues.”

Looking Ahead

Leseth expressed hope that all fans will successfully obtain their tickets and enjoy the electric atmosphere of the game. “I’m really hoping that the Texas game comes, and nothing happens — that everybody gets their tickets, gets to go see the game, and that we win,” he said, acknowledging how these scams can affect the whole community.

So, as you gear up for what promises to be an exhilarating game day, stay vigilant, buy smart, and let’s show our Aggie spirit in the safest way possible!
