In the vibrant city of Bryan, Texas, a remarkable tradition is set to unfold once again this Thanksgiving. For 36 years, a deeply committed community member, Gloria Kennard, has been the heart and soul behind the annual free Thanksgiving meals served to those in need. This beautiful initiative began way back in 1988 when Gloria felt a divine calling to give back to her community. Since then, it has blossomed into a beloved event that brings everyone together.
This special event takes place at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where Gloria and her team bring the community together to serve up delicious holiday meals. Over the years, the event has grown tremendously, and in 2024, the 36th annual Thanksgiving meal is expected to serve around 1,500 meals. It’s not just a meal; it represents the true spirit of generosity and unity in the Bryan-College Station community. Everyone is invited to join in the spirit of giving, whether by sharing a meal or lending a helping hand.
This year, the Thanksgiving meal is scheduled for Thursday, November 28, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.. Folks can look forward to a hearty menu filled with holiday classics such as stuffing, green beans, potato salad, delectable cakes, and, of course, turkey generously donated by local sponsors. It’s a perfect opportunity to come together over comforting food and warm company.
Gloria initiated this wonderful program to connect with new community members and to support those who may be facing hard times. She strongly believes that it’s the love and support from the community that makes all of this possible. Being a part of this impactful event can be a fulfilling way to engage with your community and make a real difference in someone else’s life.
In addition to Gloria’s initiative, there’s another heartwarming event called Thanksgiving in the Brazos Valley. This program is hosted by the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley, partnering with Epicures Catering and Aggie Dining. Their mission is to deliver hot Thanksgiving meals to individuals and families in Bryan-College Station who may be experiencing economic hardship. This year will mark the 41st year of this remarkable commitment, with a goal of delivering 2,000 meals.
