College Station is buzzing with excitement as Texas A&M University’s Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering has earned the prestigious title of No. 1 undergraduate program in the United States, according to the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report for 2025. This incredible accomplishment not only highlights the department’s impressive stature but also puts Texas A&M in a league of its own alongside Iowa State University of Science and Technology and the University of California-Davis, who share the top spot.
Patricia Smith, the head of the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, couldn’t be more thrilled about this recognition. She views this ranking as a major celebration and a testament to the department’s collective commitment to excellence. “We’re very excited about being named a national leader,” said Smith. “Our department is energized by the news, and it engenders a desire to stay on top and reach for even better opportunities and outcomes for our students, faculty, and staff.”
Jeffrey W. Savell, the vice chancellor and dean for Agriculture and Life Sciences, echoed Smith’s sentiments. He remarked that this ranking underscores the department’s dedication to bridging multiple disciplines within agriculture and life sciences. “It’s a proud moment for the college to have a department reach the top national ranking,” Savell shared. “It’s also noteworthy because the department bridges so much of what we do across agriculture and the life sciences.” He went on to highlight how faculty members collaborate with one another, providing innovative solutions to challenges that significantly impact the economy, the environment, and our quality of life.
Under Smith’s leadership, there’s been a focused effort to engage students in various networking, educational, and competitive activities. This is evident through the involvement with the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, which encourages students to build relationships and network effectively. “We’ve put a lot of effort into building relationships,” Smith noted. “That includes engaging with stakeholders to identify and serve their needs across industries and emerging technologies.” This proactive approach is essential for preparing students for their future careers, allowing them to connect with industry leaders and enhance their skill set.
In addition to this fantastic news, Texas A&M also ranked first in petroleum engineering on the same U.S. News list. The university’s engineering programs received high marks overall, with ninth place in business management and civil engineering, and tenth in industrial/manufacturing engineering. They also ranked twelfth for mechanical engineering and aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical programs. It’s clear that Texas A&M is making a name for itself across various fields, setting high standards for quality education.
In a world where education is constantly evolving, Texas A&M University’s remarkable achievements demonstrate its commitment to excellence, innovation, and student engagement. As they celebrate their success, both faculty and students are looking forward, ready to tackle new challenges and continue reaching for greater heights.
There hasn’t been a more exciting time to be part of the Texas A&M family, and with the university’s remarkable faculty and innovative programs, the future there is brimming with possibilities!
