The talented students captured an impressive 45 awards, marking a historic success for their publications and a noteworthy achievement in the competitive world of collegiate media.

The accolades include three first-place awards in prestigious national competitions, along with three finalist titles for the coveted Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) Pacemakers. It’s worth highlighting that Texas A&M stood out as the only university in the entire U.S. to have garnered finalist status in three distinct categories: online website, yearbook, and student business.

The awards celebrate an exceptional array of content produced by student journalists in 2024, capturing everything from in-depth feature stories to captivating designs and striking photography. This remarkable performance is notably the highest number of awards won by Texas A&M’s Student Media in several years, underscoring the hard work and dedication of the students involved.

A Glimpse into Texas A&M’s Student Media

Texas A&M Student Media encompasses three main publications: The Battalion, The Aggieland Yearbook, and Maroon Life magazine. The latter gained its independence late last year, after separating from The Battalion, allowing for a fresh approach to student-driven media.

Among the various accolades, significant awards in the business-focused categories stood out. These include third place for best engagement event, fourth place for best digital advertisement, and marketing senior Hamsini Mahadevan impressively clinching fifth place for best advertising representative across the nation. Such accomplishments reveal the multifaceted skills honed by students eager to break into the media realm.

Celebrating Individual Excellence

Several students were awarded for their exceptional contributions. Ian Curtis, a sophomore majoring in journalism, took home first place for feature reporting as managing editor of The Battalion. Meanwhile, Maroon Life editors Hudson Elkjer and Laura McClintock, alongside writer Shalina Sabih, won first place for the best magazine page/spread. In another highlight, Cara Hudson, serving as editor-in-chief of The Aggieland Yearbook, led her team to victory with first place for the best yearbook spread, along with Adriano Espinosa, a senior majoring in industrial distribution.

The awards didn’t stop there! Notable accomplishments continued with Chris Swann earning second place in sports photography and Ian Curtis snagging second place for sports story. These wins reflect not only the students’ dedication to their craft but also their motivation to push boundaries in storytelling and visual presentation.

Workshops and Networking

During the conference, the atmosphere buzzed with creativity as student journalists took part in workshops, networking events, and insightful panels led by industry experts.
