COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A timeless tradition was carried out once again at Texas A&M University on Sunday as roughly 230 freshman cadets were given their symbolic “Fish Cut” at Northgate Barber Shop. This honor, witnessed by many, marks the commencement of their Texas A&M journey, instilling the foundational principles of the prestigious university.
Unlike a regular visit to the barber, the “Fish Cut” is a significant rite of passage that molds leadership traits, nurtures camaraderie, and creates lasting bonds within the Corps and the broader community of Texas A&M. Senior cadets and university officials emphasized the importance of this ritual, beyond its apparent simplicity.
Expressing her pride in being part of the tradition, Sue Casares, the owner of the Northgate Barber Shop, stated, “It’s an honor to be part of such a significant tradition here at Texas A&M. This is the beginning of a whole new fall semester, and it’s so exciting to watch them march in. It’s so much fun.”
As the new academic year nears, Texas A&M is gearing up to welcome more than 72,000 students back on campus for Howdy Week, commencing Thursday. The fall semester officially begins on Monday, August 19, marking a new chapter for the university.
“We are maximizing the time between the start of move-in, through the first two days of classes with a variety of featured and general events on our schedule,” explained Olivia Elliot, associate coordinator of Student Life’s New Student and Family Programs.
The six-day Howdy Week schedule features 11 major events, including game nights, a President’s Picnic, Rec-a-Palooza, and a class photo for the Class of 2028. Elliot emphasized the importance of these events as an opportunity for students to build their own Howdy Week experience and connect with others who share their interests.
“The overall aim of Howdy Week is to welcome students to Aggieland and foster connections through the community,” said Libby Daggers, assistant director of Student Life. As such, the time-tested tradition of the “Fish Cut” remains a profound and cherished beginning to any Aggie’s journey, ritually emphasizing the importance of unity, leadership, and camaraderie.
