COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M’s basketball team bounced back in impressive fashion, defeating the Lamar Cardinals with a score of 97-71 on an exciting Monday night. The Aggies showcased their ability to rebound after an earlier setback, much to the delight of their passionate fans.
The spotlight of the game was firmly on Zhuric Phelps, who led the Aggies with a solid 16 points. Joining him in the scoring parade were Wade Taylor IV and Andersson Garcia, each impressively chipping in 15 points of their own. Not to be overlooked, Henry Coleman III also made a significant contribution with his 13 points. The Aggies are now 2-1 for the season, following a rocky start that saw them drop 10 spots in the AP Top 25 poll.
Phelps, who transferred from SMU, missed the season opener due to a hand injury, but has quickly found his rhythm, leading the team in scoring for the last two games. With his knack for finding the net, the Aggies are looking to build on this momentum as they gear up for tough competition ahead.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Texas A&M at the start of the game, as they found themselves struggling to find their footing early on, still in single digits more than five minutes into the match. However, after overcoming the sluggish beginning, the team heated up significantly, particularly from beyond the arc where they shot 46% on three-pointers, ending the night with a striking 55.2% shooting percentage overall.
With just over five minutes left in the first half, the Aggies led 35-25. A standout moment came when A&M guard Jace Carter made a dazzling play, stealing an inbounds pass and speeding down the court for a layup. This sparked a 13-4 run to end the half, allowing the Aggies to enter the locker room with a commanding 50-29 lead.
On this victorious night, sixth-year head coach Buzz Williams celebrated his 350th career victory, now boasting a combined record of 350-218 over 18 seasons. His experience and leadership continue to shine through, guiding the Aggies to solid performances.
As the season moves forward, Texas A&M will have to sharpen their game for SEC play. Their next challenge comes on Friday night as they face off against the formidable No. 21 Ohio State, which is sure to test their mettle. Meanwhile, Lamar will be looking to bounce back as they host Sam Houston on Sunday afternoon, hoping to turn things around after facing a tough opponent in College Station.
Texas A&M’s explosive performance against Lamar serves as an exciting reminder of what’s to come and sets the stage for a thrilling season. With players stepping up and a coach hitting milestones, there is no doubt that the Aggies are ready for the challenges ahead. Fans can look forward to more action as the team aims to build on this victory and further solidify their place in college basketball.
