On May 4, 2024, Texas A&M Student Media proudly unveiled its new leadership team for its three publications: The Battalion, Aggieland Yearbook, and Maroon Life magazine. This announcement marks a significant milestone in the continuous evolution of student media at Texas A&M.
Amy Leigh Steward, a neuroscience freshman, has been chosen as the editor-in-chief of The Battalion for the summer session and the 2024-25 academic year. After the current editor-in-chief, journalism junior Zoe May, steps down, she will take the helm of the newly formed standalone publication, Maroon Life magazine. Furthermore, journalism junior Cara Hudson, who has previously served as a design editor, will be leading the Aggieland Yearbook as the new editor-in-chief.
Upon stepping into her new role, Steward expressed her primary objective is enhancing community engagement and interaction with the readers and the residents of Bryan-College Station. She stated, “More than anything, I want people to know that this is their paper. In our very first issue, back in 1893, the editors addressed the readers by saying: ‘This paper is yours. Make it something.’ Everything I hope to do ties back to that.”
On the other hand, Hudson plans to leverage her rich experience as a design editor to improve all aspects of the Aggieland Yearbook. She is looking forward to fostering further growth for the publication and its staff. Since joining the team, she has played a crucial role in expanding the size of the Yearbook’s team from one to 12 members in the last year.
With Maroon Life magazine finally gaining distinction as a separate entity, May is ready for the uphill task of building a new organization and assembling a strong team. She plans to recruit a diverse group of creatives with varied experience levels to ensure the magazine’s smooth sailing and success.
Incoming editor-in-chief of The Battalion, Steward, firmly believes that the new leadership is ready to carry forward the legacy of the publications. She said, “With Maroon Life finally standing on its own two feet, I know Zoe is going to do everything she can to establish it as its own entity. With the amount of hard work and changes that has gone into the yearbook this past year, Cara and the Aggieland team are going to use that momentum to travel far. It’s a whole new era in Student Media, and I can’t wait to see it.”
This transition constitutes another chapter in Texas A&M Student Media’s history, representing its continuous commitment to paving the way for ambitious young minds to become future leaders in the realm of journalism and beyond.
