Texas A&M Reveals New Details Regarding Qatar Campus Closure

Transition Plans Underway for Smooth Operations Wind Down by 2028

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A recent update about the impending closure of Texas A&M University’s Qatar campus has been revealed by the University President General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III. This announcement comes just a few months after the Board of Regents made a decision to wind down operations by the year 2028 following rumors concerning data compromise in national research.

Transition Team’s Dedicated Efforts

According to President Welsh’s statement, the university’s transition team, comprising members from both Qatar and the main campus, has been diligently collaborating with the Qatar Foundation (QF) to ensure a smooth campus closure. They have been working to ensure high-quality engineering education for present students and minimize impact on faculty and staff.

Continuity in Engineering Education

In March, QF announced the initiation of a new undergraduate engineering program at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). This program will utilize the slot currently occupied by Texas A&M at Qatar. The future program aims to adopt students who would have applied to Texas A&M, thereby maintaining continuity in engineering instruction within Education City.

New Opportunities & Support for Faculty and Staff

Meanwhile, the transition plan has provisions for awarding faculty and staff adequate time prior to their terms’ conclusion, guaranteeing an advance notice of 90 days in all cases and over six months in most situations. The university has also inaugurated a portal allowing current employees in Qatar to apply for positions at the College Station campus, providing them prime consideration for these roles.

Legacy of Texas A&M at Qatar

While the campus’ imminent closure is a reality, President Welsh acknowledges the significant legacy of Texas A&M at Qatar. Over 1,500 Aggie engineers have graduated from the campus since its initiation, underscoring the impact of the institution. He expressed gratitude towards the Qatar campus community, recognizing their mettle and contributions throughout this transition.

A Reminder for All Aggies

“As Aggies, we’re hardwired to build things, so planning the closure of something so many of you were involved in building isn’t easy, but we are moving forward with respect for our students, faculty, and staff, and the legacy we have created with Qatar Foundation,” stated Welsh.

The university intends to keep sharing updates as the transition evolves. For more details, Texas A&M community members are encouraged to reach out to President Welsh directly at president@tamu.edu.
