Texas A&M Faculty Senate Backs Colleagues at Qatar Campus with Unanimous Resolution

Texas A&M Faculty Senate Unanimously Passes Resolution Supporting their Colleagues at the Qatar Campus

Unanimous Support for Colleagues at Qatar Campus

Roughly six weeks after Texas A&M system board of regents voted to shut the Qatar campus of Texas A&M, the faculty senate overwhelmingly adopted a resolution pledging their unstinting support for their talent-filled colleagues who face the losing ends of their jobs over the next few years. The resolution was passed after a robust and unanimous vote that saw 64 senators standing by their colleagues in the Middle-Eastern nation.

Resolution Submitted by a Qatar-Based Faculty Senate Member

The resolution, tabled by a faculty senate member currently based in Qatar at the university, secured the endorsement of senate speaker Tracy Hammond. The event transpired during the faculty senate’s March regular meeting, when it was one in the morning in Qatar even as it was Monday afternoon in College Station (March 18).

What does the Resolution State?

Presented by Brittany Bounds, an instructional assistant history professor stationed at the Qatar Campus, the resolution provided support for the faculty at Texas A&M University Qatar. The faculty mentioned have been pegged to be in good standing within not just the university but also in their academic disciplines, as well as the scholarly community in the United States.

Harassment of Qatar Campus Educators

The resolution was passed in the wake of misleading information habits that led to harassment of educators based in the Qatar campus. Earlier, certain groups had falsely suggested that the faculty at the Qatar campus were engaged in sensitive research pertaining to national security and nuclear issues.

Standing by the Qatar educators

The faculty senate has strongly rebuked these false allegations, stating categorically that the Qatar campus does not engage in research involving national security or nuclear issues, underlining the university’s abidance to academic freedom and its commitment to protect its faculty from misleading allegations.

Dr. Bounds also expressed that there is anticipation of a possible surge of new waves of false information about the work being conducted at the Texas A&M Qatar campus.
