Staying Hydrated: Tips from Dr. Lon Young of Caprock Health

Understanding Hydration: It’s More Than Just Drinking Water

BRYAN, Texas – In a recent segment of The Three sponsored by Caprock Health, Dr. Lon Young shared important insights about staying hydrated. Water intake is crucial for our overall health, but it’s not just about quantity. It’s about understanding individual needs and health factors. The standard recommendation for water intake is 3.5 liters for men and 2.5 liters for women on average. However, Dr. Young emphasizes this is a general guideline and many external factors influence these numbers.

Factors Affecting Hydration Levels

“None of us are average, some of us are big, some are small, some work outside, some work indoors, some of us exercise regularly, some of us not so much,” Young said. “So I don’t think it’s advisable to get into trying to specify a certain volume of fluid that a person should take in.” Knowing one’s own body and lifestyle is the key to maintaining proper hydration, according to Dr. Young.

Listening to Your Body

One’s body efficiently signals the need for hydration. If you feel thirsty and notice a darker color in your urine than usual, it’s time to increase your water intake. “Most important is to listen to your body. The body is very effective at becoming thirsty when it needs fluid,” Young said. “So as long as your urine seems like it’s the normal color for you and you don’t feel thirsty, then you’re probably getting enough fluids.”
