College Station Welcomes New REI Co-Op: A Grand Opening Celebration!
The excitement was palpable in College Station this weekend as the community gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the brand-new REI Co-op store located at 615 University Drive East. Outdoor enthusiasts from near and far came together for the festivities that officially kicked off on Thursday evening.
A Night to Remember
As the sun set on Thursday, the store opened its doors for a special preview party where loyal members and eager customers got a first look at the expansive 22,000 square-foot space. The following morning, the energy surged with a delightful “webbing-cutting” ceremony, where store manager Alexandra Gaisbauer led the charge by slicing through a vibrant strip of red webbing to mark the occasion. Cheers erupted as the store opened its doors wide to the public.
Welcoming Enthusiasm
“We’re the 11th location that opened in Texas, and it’s about time we came to College Station,” Gaisbauer said with a smile, noticing the apparent excitement among the locals. The store already boasts a solid membership base of approximately 7,000 members in the area, and many were thrilled to finally have an REI nearby.
Those who showed up early for the grand opening were treated to some fun surprises. Among the first in line was local resident Jackson Potter, who arrived at the store at 10 p.m. on Thursday. “I’ve never shopped at REI before, and now it’s my chance. I want to see what free stuff they’ve got!” he declared giddily while awaiting the morning unveiling.
Joining the Excitement
As the clock struck 10 a.m., a long line formed outside, complete with excited customers eagerly anticipating their chance to explore the latest outdoor gear. Ashley Pearson, a Texas A&M University student, felt the buzz in the air, “It’s my first time here, and I cannot wait!” Her friend Ella Ray shared the sentiment, stating she was hoping to pick up some essentials for her upcoming camping and backpacking trips.
The REI Experience
One of the unique aspects of the REI experience is its cooperative model. Gaisbauer emphasized, “We’re a co-op, which means we’re not just about selling products; it’s about building a community.” For a $30 lifetime membership, customers gain access to numerous perks, which include discounts and a share in the co-op’s profits. Gaisbauer noted that REI gives away about 70% of its profits to support various conservation efforts and sustainable practices.
Local Partnerships and Philanthropy
In its opening weekend, the store partnered with the Rio Brazos Audubon Society to promote local conservation efforts. Mark McDermott, president of the organization, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with REI. The funds we raise will contribute to building a handicap-accessible bird blind.” The Audubon Society was selling mugs, the profits of which would support their mission of preserving bird habitats.
An Eventful Weekend
Throughout the weekend, attendees were invited to participate in special events that included educational activities, giveaways, and live music. Gaisbauer highlighted that each day would offer something new, “We just want to meet people where they are outdoors and foster a love for nature.”
What Customers Are Saying
As people strolled through the store, they were impressed by the variety and quality of products on display. Guests Jason and Jennifer Jennings shared their excitement, “It’s big and clean! We love the different gear and just being here.” From hiking boots to snowboarding gear, the new store had it all.
A New Chapter for College Station
Even Mayor John Nichols popped in to join the festivities, remarking, “There was so much demand for REI here, and I can see why. It offers a fresh feel for College Station.”
With local partners and patrons celebrating the grand opening together, it’s safe to say that the new REI Co-Op in College Station is not just a place to shop; it’s quickly becoming a community hub for adventurers, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. In the spirit of connection and outdoor appreciation, the opening weekend was just the beginning of what promises to be a wonderful journey together.
