COLLEGE STATION, Texas — In a beautiful display of community spirit, residents of College Station banded together this Veterans Day to honor local veterans in a way that truly warms the heart. This year, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and put their sewing skills to work for a special project: creating quilts to be gifted to veterans, as a touching symbol of gratitude for their service.
Leading the charge for this heartfelt endeavor was Marjean Neve, the coordinator of the Quilts of Valor (QOV) chapter in College Station. And guess what? She had some exciting news to share! “This year, we actually presented 34 quilts to people, to veterans, male and female, and military personnel. So it’s been a big year for us, so we’re excited about it,” she said, beaming with pride.
Each quilt isn’t just a cozy blanket; it’s a labor of love, history, and personal connection. Volunteers pour their hearts into these quilts, working for months—sometimes even up to a year—creating unique designs that hold special meaning for the recipient. Every patch and stitch carries a story, and as each quilt comes together, it becomes a cherished gift that encapsulates deep appreciation.
One of the dedicated volunteers, Licia Kim, shared how the project touches her on a personal level. Having been part of the Quilts of Valor initiative for nearly four years, she said, “As I’m sewing, I’m thinking about that person constantly, and it just brings a smile to my face because I know they will enjoy it that much more.”
Licia’s connection runs even deeper, as her husband, Steve Kim, is a recipient of a Quilt of Valor himself. Steve, who served in the U.S. Air Force, expressed profound gratitude for the love and dedication shown by the volunteers. “The fact that the volunteer took hours out of their own precious life and they’re willing to do that for us veterans, especially my wife doing what she did for me is just a huge blessing. I certainly appreciate what they did,” he shared with a heartfelt smile.
The act of giving and receiving these quilts serves a much larger purpose: ensuring that veterans feel remembered and valued. Charles Gilreath, an Army veteran and current volunteer, explained his motivation for joining the program after he received his own quilt. “We want veterans to know that they haven’t been forgotten, that their service is valuable. Even though we may not be receiving medals, the country still believes in the service we did,” he said, with deep conviction.
The Quilts of Valor group in College Station is primarily composed of dedicated seniors who work tirelessly to show appreciation for the veterans in their community. They rely on donated materials for crafting their quilts, and they collaborate closely with local veterans to ensure their service is honored properly.
As each quilt is carefully crafted and presented, the deep sense of gratitude from veterans and their families becomes evident. The tangible warmth of the quilts is matched only by the warmth of the community spirit, creating a treasured bond between residents and those who have served.
The heartfelt effort displayed by the Quilts of Valor group in College Station exemplifies how appreciation can come in many forms. Whether it’s through stitching fabric together or simply sharing stories, the connection made between veterans and their community reminds us all of the importance of honoring their service.
