College Station Man Sentenced to Prison for Violating Probation a Second Time

An individual from College Station, Madeen Maredia, is set to face a prison sentence following his admission of breaching probation the second time. This stems from an incident back in 2017 where Maredia confessed to instigating a fatal car accident.

An Incident That Left One Dead and Two Others Injured

Maredia, who was merely 17 when the incident took place, was speeding at a whopping 87 miles per hour on University and Tarrow intersection when his vehicle hit another car. The crash instantly claimed one life and left two other individuals seriously wounded.

In the wake of the incident, Maredia faced charges of manslaughter along with two counts of aggravated assault with a deathly weapon. The court found him guilty, subsequently sentencing him to ten years under probation. As part of his probation conditions, the court required him to spend the day prior, of, and post the car crash anniversary in jail.

Probation Violations Lead to Prison Sentence

Fast forward to last Thursday (April 25), Maredia was back in court to face charges for a second breach of his probation conditions. Court records indicated that most of his violations, recorded over six pages, were related to drug and alcohol use or failing to subject himself to necessary tests.

Following this second round of probation violations, a fresh plea agreement was drafted involving the Brazos County District Attorney’s office. Maredia accepted the agreement, which involved a seven-year prison sentence and cannot be appealed.

The agreement includes credit for the time already served by Maredia. This means that the approximately one year and eight months he has already served – 628 days to be exact – would be subtracted from his new sentence. It’s important to note that Maredia has been held in the Brazos County Jail since December 8, 2022.

Effects on the Local Community

The story of Maredia’s crime and subsequent sentencing has had profound impacts on the local community, stirring debates about the efficacy of probation and the need for tougher sentencing on such serious offenses. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences of reckless driving and emphasizes the necessity of continuous efforts in community policing, youth engagement, and education about traffic safety laws.

Looking Forward

As the community and the victims’ families put this traumatic event behind them, the lesson remains. Laws are in place to protect individuals and maintain peace, violation of which often spells dire consequences. The hope hereon is for stricter adherence to regulations, not just by Maredia, but by everyone in the society.
