Northgate in Bryan-College Station Seeks Your Help to Document Its Business History

Have you ever strolled down University Drive in Bryan-College Station and marveled at the diverse array of businesses that have sprouted up over the decades? Well, there’s something special happening, and it’s all about documenting the colorful history of the Northgate area’s businesses, particularly on the iconic “front row.”

That’s right! The Association of Former Students has kicked off a research project aimed at gathering photos and documenting the rich history of local businesses. Yes, they’re reaching out to you – yes, you – as well as other Aggies and local residents, to help piece together a timeline that paints a vivid picture of the changes that have shaped Northgate over the years.

What they are looking for

So, what are they seeking? If you happen to have any old photos of businesses in Northgate, particularly those situated on University Drive, they’re encouraging you to dig through your family albums and share your snapshots. Make sure those photos have an estimated date, whether it’s a year or a semester, because every detail helps tell the story.

The project has already made some great strides by tapping into existing resources such as the Brazos Buildings and Businesses blog and local city records. But they really want the community’s input to capture those memories and moments that official records might miss.

A glimpse into the past

Looking back through the years, Northgate has had its fair share of memorable businesses. For instance, at 203 University, folks remember chowing down at Handy Burger from 1962 until the late 1970s, followed by the arrival of The Onion Ring in 1979. Fast forward to 1983, the beloved Deluxe Burger Bar graced the area, evolving into the Deluxe Diner and, today, customers enjoy their nights at Chimy’s Cerveceria, which has been around since January 2013.

Not too far away, at 205-207 University, you would find a bustling New York Bagel in 1992, then Schotzi’s & Skybarr between 2007 and 2015, before the current hotspot, Good Bull Icehouse, took over in October 2021.

Even more history can be found at 209 University. Memories of Aggieland Flowers, which operated from 1972 until 2007, linger in the minds of many. Today, locals lounge at the 12 Rooftop Bar & Lounge which recently replaced The Ranch from early 2015.

Let’s not forget the years gone by at 217 University where the Campus Theater entertained crowds from 1940 until the 1980s, eventually making way for the cozy vibes at Shiner Park that are still going strong since fall 2016.

And if you pass by 301 University, you might remember the Phillips 66 gas station that was a staple in the early ’70s, with a Chemron joining the scene around 2016. The area is now marked with a lot for sale as of late 2022.

Get involved!

This project offers a delightful way for you to participate in preserving the history of a beloved part of the Texas A&M community. If you have any information or photographs that could enrich this timeline, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can shoot an email over to AggieNetwork@AggieNetwork.com. Remember, every picture, every tidbit of information counts!

This campaign reflects not only a desire to document Northgate’s history but also a commitment to understanding the evolving landscape influenced by university life. So, let’s help preserve the colorful past of this vibrant community, one photo at a time!
