Late Friday, the International Leadership of Texas College Station (ILTexas) released a comprehensive statement shedding further light on the alleged sexual assault case involving a former instructor. The document acknowledged previous concerns regarding the said teacher, Jose Adrian Hernandez Grimaldo, raised soon after his appointment at the College Station campus.
The statement further confirmed that Grimaldo continued to work in the school and was even permitted to shift to another campus in North Texas, despite being under scrutiny for inappropriate contact with female students. His work continued even as an investigation into accusations of sexual assault was ongoing. Grimaldo was arrested last week following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old student in a campus restroom and threatened her against disclosing the matter.
According to ILTexas, Grimaldo joined the faculty on August 1, 2022, subjected to a thorough background check as is the norm for all new employees. He was fully cleared for employment, also receiving additional security clearance from Homeland Security for his J-1 teacher visa.
However, as soon as August 31, 2022, a parent communicated to the school principal about a bruise on their child’s arm, allegedly caused by Grimaldo. The school took immediate action, reporting the incident to the Department of Family and Protective Services and the College Station Police Department by September 2. Subsequent investigations concluded that Grimaldo had physically moved a student from the floor after a disagreement with another student. He was issued a Letter of Reprimand after the investigations concluded on October 4.
On February 13, 2023, new accusations were brought against Grimaldo, alleging inappropriate physical contact with students. Detailed investigations ensued once again, commencing on February 14, during which Grimaldo was placed on administrative leave. Although the ILTexas investigation didn’t find enough evidence to substantiate the claims, further violations of the previous directive resulted in Grimaldo receiving a notice of termination on March 24, 2023.
However, Grimaldo contested the termination, leading to a hearing on May 23, 2023, where the termination was overturned. Consequently, he was put on probation for the 2023-2024 school year and was offered a teaching position at ILTexas Lancaster K-8, to commence on August 1, 2023.
In September 2023, another parent reached out to the school principal with allegations of inappropriate sexual interactions involving their student and Grimaldo. The school immediately reported to the local authorities, which led to a collaboration between ILTexas and the College Station Police Department.
The authorities subpoenaed all records related to Grimaldo on October 31, placing him on administrative leave again. Despite the school stating their internal investigation, initiated on November 14, couldn’t substantiate the sexual assault claims, Grimaldo was arrested on May 21, 2024, after which he was dismissed from ILTexas Lancaster K-8 on May 24.
In the wake of the recent events, ILTexas has acknowledged that their first official communication confirming Grimaldo’s arrest was inaccurate, and the district is currently reevaluating its communication protocols. The school emphasized its commitment to student safety, transparency, and cooperation with local law enforcement, reassuring that when a complaint concerning student safety is received, it is taken very seriously, and a thorough investigation is initiated immediately.
ILTexas concluded its statement by urging that all further queries regarding the investigation should be directed to the College Station Police Department, underscoring their commitment to ensure justice served in the case.
