Bryan and College Station are buzzing with community spirit this November, as several key initiatives unfold to spread cheer and bring people together! Local residents are invited to dive into the excitement from everything to local library programs to the annual holiday charity campaign.
First up, the Bryan + College Station Public Library System is making waves with their recent chat on “The Infomaniacs.” Branch Manager Derika Bailey shared the joy of gifting books, discussing some of her favorite reads and highlighting upcoming programs that promise to engage and enlighten the community. If you’re a book lover or just looking for a fun way to spend your days, Derika’s recommendations are a must-listen!
With crafting sessions on the horizon and various library programs planned, there’s something for everyone. So, gather the family and check out what the library has in store – it might just be the perfect weekend outing!
The holiday season is also kicking off with the Bryan/College Station Salvation Army’s annual holiday campaign. Starting today, November 15th, the campaign is centered around the beloved Angel Tree program. This program allows community members to adopt local children by selecting paper angels from trees located in various shops, including Blue Baker restaurants.
Each paper angel represents a child who will receive gifts, and all that is required from you is to drop off presents for your adopted child by December 11th. It’s a heartwarming way to spread the holiday cheer and make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need!
During the kickoff event held at Blue Baker, there was plenty of holiday magic in the air. A lively barbershop quartet called Tetrachord brought smiles and festive tunes, setting a cheerful tone for the announcements that followed. The community gathered to enjoy music, hear speeches from local leaders, and participate in a ceremonial ribbon cutting to officially launch this year’s campaign.
Foodies will be thrilled to know about the limited-edition Angel Cookies available for purchase at all three Blue Baker locations from today through Sunday, November 17th, while supplies last. The sweet treat not only delights taste buds but also benefits the Angel Tree initiative, making it a feel-good purchase!
Attention park lovers! Big changes are on the horizon for Thomas Park. The College Station city council has accepted a concept plan for an impressive $5.94 million in improvements, which will enhance the park experience for all. This project is partly funded by a bond approved by voters in November 2022 and is set to bring a host of new features including a discovery play area and low-intensity exercise stations.
While construction won’t start for about one and a half years, the anticipation is already building. The integrated plans for the park improvements coordinate with the city’s work on surrounding streets, ensuring a seamless upgrade to the whole area.
On another exciting note, the Bryan city council recently approved property tax breaks to support the expansion of Honeywell electronics chemicals. This $120 million project is aimed at producing new items for the semiconductor industry and is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including approximately $900,000 in additional payroll and the creation of 10 to 12 new jobs over the next five years.
All these happenings in Bryan and College Station are just a glimpse into the lively spirit of our community! Whether you’re attending a library event, spreading holiday cheer through the Salvation Army, enjoying park upgrades, or witnessing local expansions — there’s never a dull moment. Let’s continue to support each other and make this season one of kindness and connection!
