As residents of Bryan prepare for a festive Halloween, local authorities are stepping up their efforts to ensure everyone’s safety during this spirited time of year. On Thursday, October 31, Officer Seth Waller from the Bryan Police Department took some time to discuss crucial Halloween safety tips and property crime prevention on The Infomaniacs with Scott DeLucia.
Officer Waller emphasized the importance of keeping a watchful eye on our neighborhoods during Halloween, advising families to stay in well-lit areas and to make sure children wear reflective materials on their costumes. “It’s all about making sure the kiddos can enjoy the night while keeping them safe,” he said. He also suggested parents accompany younger children and ensure older kids have a trusted group when out trick-or-treating. Additionally, homeowners were reminded to keep their lights on and to check their properties for potential hazards before the trick-or-treaters arrive.
But safety on Halloween isn’t just about trick-or-treating. Officer Waller also touched on the recent upswing in property crime and how residents can protect themselves. Installing doorbell cameras is an excellent method to deter thieves and keep tabs on any suspicious activity. He encouraged community members to report any unusual behavior and to be proactive about their home security.
In a separate incident earlier that morning, the College Station Police were involved in a rather alarming crash. A vehicle lost control and careened into the backyard of a duplex on Oldenburg Lane. According to the police department, the car struck the building after passing through the yard. Thankfully, they reported that any occupants inside the duplex were unharmed. However, the incident was tragic for the owner of a four-and-a-half-month-old puppy that was tragically killed during the crash. The heartbroken dog owner commented on social media, sharing their grief over losing their “fur baby” as well as their home and motorcycle in what was described as a devastating event.
Police confirmed that the duplex suffered significant structural damage due to the impact and it serves as a somber reminder for all of us to drive cautiously and be aware of our surroundings.
In other news, local law enforcement had a significant bust involving a traffic stop which yielded an impressive amount of marijuana and cash. A Bryan Police officer pulled over a suspicious vehicle traveling too closely to another car on the freeway, and things escalated from there. The driver was clocked going an astonishing 90 miles per hour before pulling into a convenience store parking lot. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer detected marijuana fumes wafting from the open sunroof, leading to a search of the automobile.
To the officer’s surprise, the search uncovered more than **nine pounds** of marijuana along with nearly **$7,000 in cash** hidden in the driver’s pants pocket. It’s stated that the street value of the marijuana is at least **$10,000**, making this a considerable haul for law enforcement. The driver, 37-year-old Christopher Paul Young Jr. of Bryan, was arrested and charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of a vape pen containing THC. This arrest marks another entry in Young’s lengthy history with the police, as he was previously awaiting trial on other drug charges.
Lastly, we learned about Issac Allen, a man who has faced legal troubles before, who admitted to assaulting a Bryan police officer back in September 2021. After failing to adhere to a community supervision agreement, he was sentenced to three years in prison. This serves as a stark reminder about the importance of complying with the law and fulfilling one’s responsibilities.
As we move forward into the post-Halloween season, let us remember to stay vigilant, keep our communities safe, and support one another during both festive and challenging times.
