Criminal Activities Disrupt Peace in College Station
In a couple of criminal incidents unfolding earlier this week in College Station, local law enforcement was quick to respond and secure the city. These untoward incidents have once again reiterated the importance of community vigilance and adherence to laws for securing a peaceful neighborhood.
Arrest for Gun Misconduct
The first incident occurred late night on June 30, causing significant alarm among residents in the Northgate district. A vigilant College Station officer spotted a passenger in a moving vehicles, holding out what appeared to be an A-R 15 style rifle from his car window. On halting the vehicle, the subsequent investigation led to the finding of the suspected rifle along with a handgun in the passenger’s possession.
These firearms were not reported as stolen, however, flaunting the rifle openly, especially aimed at alarming the residents, led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man, Marcus Javon Smith, hailing from Crockett. Smith faced charges for disorderly conduct, with the accusation of weapon display and unlawful carrying of a weapon, owing to the improper holstering of his handgun. After posting bonds amounting to $8000, Smith was released from police custody.
Hit and Run Incident And Arrest
The second alarming incident took place during the same weekend, specifically on June 29, involving a hit-and-run accident at the premises of a local hotel. According to College Station police arrest reports, the hotel’s video surveillance system helped identify a vehicle that collided with the Hampton Inn’s building and two parked cars on the premises before leaving the location.
The alleged driver of the vehicle was a current guest of the hotel, who claimed to have returned to his room and fallen asleep after the incidents. He mentioned his lack of insurance for the vehicle involved, further complicating the situation. He was identified as 52-year-old David Riedel, a resident of College Station.
Riedel was arrested on charges of leaving an accident scene involving intensive property damage. The total estimated cost due to these damages accounted for approximately $9,500 for the hotel building and over $14,000 for the two vehicles involved. Like Smith, Riedel managed to secure his release by posting bonds amounting to $6000.
