Sponsor Our ArticlesLarry Bollin, a resident of Iola, Grimes County, has been deemed mentally competent to stand trial for a mass shooting incident that occurred in April 2021. The jury trial is set for July, following a history of mental health evaluations and legal proceedings. In other news, the Brazos County Commission is reviewing employee compensation, and a new roundabout construction is underway in College Station to enhance traffic flow.
Hey there! There are some important updates happening around the Brazos Valley that you won’t want to miss. From legal rulings to new construction projects, it’s all shaping up to be quite the week in our community!
Let’s start with some serious news coming out of Grimes County. Larry Bollin, a 31-year-old resident from Iola, has been declared mentally competent to stand trial. This decision comes after Bollin faced extended hospital stays, having initially been deemed mentally incompetent back in November 2023. Now, he’s gearing up for a jury trial set for July.
Bollin is facing a multitude of serious charges following a shocking mass shooting that took place in April 2021 at a manufacturing plant in Bryan. The list of charges includes murder, attempted capital murder of several individuals, and five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The community has been on edge ever since the tragic event, and this trial will be closely followed by many.
Human resources director Jennifer Salazar highlighted that this study is about taking a broad look at the compensation landscape, moving beyond just paychecks. Commissioner Chuck Konderla and Wanda Watson are advocating for a shift to performance-based raises rather than the traditional seniority-based system.
However, not everyone is on board. Newly elected commissioners Fred Brown and Bentley Nettles have voiced their opposition, citing recently allocated raises that were already given to past commission positions. It’s a lively debate that reflects the changing perspectives on how to best reward public service employees!
If you’ve been driving around College Station recently, you might have noticed some action at the intersection of Jones-Butler and Holleman. The city council has given the green light for the construction of a brand-new roundabout. This project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety in the busy area.
The contract for the roundabout’s construction has been awarded for a cool $741,000 following a unanimous vote by the council. Additionally, a contingency fee of $74,000 has been approved, bringing the total budget for this project to nearly $816,000. It’s interesting to note that after this approval, the council still has $152,000 left in its budget—a little extra cushion for any unforeseen expenditures that may arise.
This decision followed a thorough discussion about the striking price differences in the five bids that were submitted. It seems like the roundabout will be a positive addition to College Station’s infrastructure!
And while we are on the topic of community, let’s not forget about our partners at Health for All, who have been busy preparing for the upcoming flu season. The organization is also organizing a new fundraising luncheon, aiming to gather support for its ongoing initiatives. Executive Director Liz Dickey has emphasized the importance of community health during this time of year.
It seems like there’s a lot happening in the Brazos Valley! Be sure to stay tuned for more updates on these stories as they develop, and don’t forget to support local initiatives that aim to make our community a better place!
