Brazos Valley Man, Grady Winkler, Concludes 53-year Career at Texas A&M University

A Long and Fulfilling Journey Comes to a Close

Grady Winkler, a man of varied skills, interests, and a strong commitment to his work, has recently announced his retirement after spending 53 years serving at Texas A&M University in Brazos Valley. Winkler, resident of rural Bryan, began his career at the university’s facilities services department back in 1971, and his last shift took place on Wednesday.

Witnessing Transformative Progress

During his tenure, Winkler witnessed firsthand the significant developments that took place within the campus. “It’s been amazing,” Winkler reflected. “Many, many parts of this campus were literally pastures. Just the fact that there’s so many high rises and all the buildings are jammed right next to each other now, is incredible.”

Legacy and Achievements

In his multifaceted career, Winkler has held various roles – he served as an electrician’s helper, a construction inspector, and HazMat coordinator for SSC Services for the university. He witnessed the construction of many of the most iconic structures on A&M’s campus, thereby leaving an indelible mark on the infrastructure of the institution. His meticulous work and dedication gained him respect and admiration from co-workers over the decades.

Work Life and Family

Despite his love for work, the wish to spend more time with his wife, Wendy, and four children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren made the decision to retire much easier. “I’m used to working and I like working,” said Winkler, affirming that his passion for work remains undeterred even as he steps into his retirement.

The Journey to Retirement

Grady Winkler began his journey towards building a fulfilling career in adulthood by enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 back in 1962. Serving as a fire control technician, he managed radar on U.S. ships, including during the Vietnam War. This phase in the Navy eventually paved the way for his career at Texas A&M University. From earning $2.65 per hour as an electrician’s helper to being a pivotal part of a number of iconic landmarks on A&M’s campus, Winkler’s career has been marked by dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment.

Saying Goodbye but Leaving a Mark

With Winkler’s retirement, the university and his co-workers lose an invaluable member. However, his commitment to his work has left a lasting impact. His steadfastness, attention to detail, and dedication to safety will continue to be remembered at the university.

In the words of regional director of operations, Jeff Heye, “He’s always been good about making sure the contractors are crossing every ‘t’ and dotting every ‘i’ and doing things the right way.” He further added, “He’s very conscious of making sure we keep the environment safe for the students and for the visitors on campus.”

Into the Sunset

While his significant contributions and selfless service will weigh heavily on the hearts of his co-workers and the entire university, Winkler remains humble. “I just don’t like the fanfare,” he admitted. Fanfare or not, Winkler’s retirement marks the end of a truly remarkable career that spanned over five decades, etched with an unwavering resolve, an unmatched dedication, and an unforgettable legacy.
