‘Galaxy gas’ intended to inhale leads to arrests, Brazos Valley experts warn of dangers
Introduction
In Bryan, Texas, a recent arrest highlights the growing issue of nitrous oxide abuse, easily accessible and often intended for recreational inhalation. Public and legal attention is now being directed towards the substances known as whippets or “Galaxy Gas.” These canisters of compressed gas, regularly used for whip cream or medical purposes, are increasingly being misused for recreational highs.
Recent Arrests
College Station police made three arrests on Tuesday following a traffic stop. Upon suspicion, officers discovered Ketamine and a one-liter canister of nitrous oxide in the vehicle. The individuals arrested confessed to their intention of inhaling the “Galaxy Gas,” having purchased it from a local vape shop.
Legal Consequences
Bryan Attorney Shane Phelps issued a stern warning following the case. He explained that while certain products may be legally acquired, their misuse can certainly lead to legal repercussions. This is especially the case when the misused substance is found in possession of a minor. “It’s so unregulated through vape shops and things like that. You don’t know what’s in there. Just because they sell it over the counter doesn’t make it safe,” Phelps advised. He also cautioned vape stores to be cautious since they risk losing their licenses and suffering prosecution.
Substance Abuse Trends
The Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse ( BVCASA ) spoke out on this growing trend. Alton Burton, BVCASA Prevention Services Director, expressed shock at the resurgence of nitrous oxide abuse, particularly due to its easy access. “It’s a drug that’s typically used among teens and a lot of that is because of access. So, from a parent standpoint, really watching and monitoring whipped cream, different things like that that we wouldn’t even think about, because that literally provides kids access to be able to use nitrous oxide for recreational purposes,” Burton advised.
Long-term Damage
Though the effects of nitrous oxide use can provide users with a brief high, the long-term effects are alarmingly damaging. Burton outlined some severe consequences, which include brain damage, liver failure, heart attacks, and loss of bowel movements. Discussing the potential dangers of these substances with young people is critical in preventing their misuse, Burton emphasized.
Growing Legislation
In the wake of rising nitrous oxide abuse, states are taking steps to regulate the issue. Michigan recently enacted a law outlawing the sale of any device designed for inhaling nitrous oxide. Simultaneously, Louisiana has moved to limit the retail sale of nitrous oxide.
Conclusion
As nitrous oxide abuse resurfaces, it is clear that widespread education on the dangers of its misuse, alongside legal action, is necessary. It’s important for all – parents, store owners, and youth – to understand the implications of nitrous oxide and its potential for abuse.
