Fiestas Patrias Parade Lights Up the Streets of Bryan

This past Sunday, the city of Bryan, Texas, was alive with excitement as hundreds of community members gathered to celebrate the annual Fiestas Patrias Parade. This vibrant event not only showcased the rich Hispanic and Latino culture, but it also brought together families, friends, and neighbors in a joyous celebration of unity and heritage.

A Celebration of Heritage

From the very first floats rolling down the streets to the lively music echoing around, everything felt so inviting. The parade was filled with colorful decorations, energetic dancers, and, of course, the tantalizing aroma of delicious food wafting from the various booths set up along the route. It was a feast not only for the eyes but also for the senses. As we watched the parade unfold, it was impossible not to be swept up in the enthusiastic atmosphere that enveloped us all.

Growth and Community

Roy Lopez, the founder of the event, shared his sentiment about how far they’ve come since the parade’s inception in 1990. “When we first started, we never dreamed that it was going to get this big,” he said with a smile. It’s astonishing to think that what began as a small gathering has blossomed into a grand celebration featuring not just a parade, but also food booths, craft booths, and live bands. The community spirit shone through in every part of the event, making it a beautiful experience for everyone involved.

Empowering the Next Generation

A highlight of the event this year was the crowning of the parade king and queen, Sarah Castillo and Uriel Cortes. Both students expressed their pride and excitement in their new roles. Sarah, who was crowned queen, shared her thoughts on the honor: “I’m happy to be queen because it gives me the opportunity to help be an inspiration to younger Hispanic girls to leave for higher education and strive to get scholarships and continue their dreams.” Uriel echoed these sentiments, explaining how much the scholarship meant to him as it would help support his education. “It’s an honor to be a king this year,” he said. “It means a lot for me to be able to continue my education and use the scholarship for my tuition.”

Looking Ahead

As the event wrapped up, Roy Lopez expressed his hopes for future growth, aiming to spread the celebration to other communities. “As we grow in the community, I think it’s important to invite others to have an international Fiesta Patrias because there are other countries here that celebrate Las Fiestas Patrias like us, their independence,” he noted. It’s heartening to know that this event not only serves as a celebration but also as a stepping stone for educational opportunities within the community, with plans to increase scholarships and broaden participation in the years to come.

A Community That Celebrates Together

The Fiestas Patrias Parade is more than just a parade; it’s a reminder of the strength and diversity present in Bryan, Texas. It’s a gathering that celebrates heritage, supports education, and fosters unity among its residents. With every passing year, this event continues to cultivate a sense of belonging and pride, and it has certainly left us all looking forward to next year’s festivities.
