Exciting New Opportunities for Veterans in College Station
College Station is buzzing with excitement as the community prepares for a significant event on Tuesday, October 29th. Local organizers are coming together to form a new American Legion Post, and they’re inviting honorably discharged veterans to join in the effort. This initiative is timely, considering the growth of the community and the increasing number of veterans calling College Station home.
The Need for a New Post
Heather Humphrey, one of the main organizers, explains the motivation behind creating this new post. “We are becoming saturated with more and more veterans as the years keep coming, so that is where that idea came from,” she shares. The American Legion’s national office also recommends that every community with an independent school district should have its own post. This is crucial for fostering a supportive environment for veterans and their families.
What’s Happening at the Meeting?
The upcoming meeting will be held at Urban Table at 6:30 p.m. and aims to accomplish several important tasks, including:
- Getting the charter started
- Deciding on the new post number
- Choosing a name for the post
- Establishing membership dues
Humphrey also emphasizes that they need at least 15 new members who have never been part of the American Legion. “Once we have our temporary charter, we’ll be able to start accepting transfers from other posts,” she adds, mentioning the potential influx of veterans looking to join the new post.
Getting Connected
For those interested in becoming founders of this new post, it’s crucial to bring along a copy of the DD Form 214 Discharge Orders. This document verifies that individuals have served honorably in the military, making it necessary for membership in the American Legion.
Joining the meeting will be Texas State Commander Tom Marty, adding a layer of authority and support to this new initiative. He’ll be encouraging veterans in the area and discussing the growth of the American Legion within College Station. Additionally, Texas State Judge Advocate JD Langley will be on hand to walk everyone through the process of chartering a new post.
