In a lively showdown held on Tuesday night, the residents of Bryan, Texas, have made their voices heard in the local City Council election. Incumbent Marca Ewers-Shurtleff has emerged victorious in the Single Member District 5 race against challenger Patrick Giammalva. With a healthy margin, Ewers-Shurtleff secured 2,401 votes, translating to an impressive 59.3% of the total votes cast. On the other hand, Giammalva gathered 1,649 votes, which amounts to 40.7%.
Marca Ewers-Shurtleff isn’t a newcomer to the political arena. In fact, she has been gracing the halls of local government since November 2022 when she first took on a runoff race and triumphed over her opponent A.J. Renold. Practicing law in Downtown Bryan since 2015, she brings a wealth of experience to the table. Prior to her current council seat, she held positions on the Bryan Business Council, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Zoning Board of Adjustments, showcasing her commitment to the community.
One notable aspect of her legitimate service is that she was the only woman on the Bryan City Council during her 2022-2024 term—an inspiring figure, paving the way for greater female representation in local politics.
Giammalva, although now defeated, is not new to the political scene either. He previously ran for Bryan City Council Place 6 in 2022 but met with defeat against councilor Kevin Boriskie. Known for his outspoken nature, Giammalva once referred to himself as the “Record holder for being told to shut up and sit down” in a letter to the editor. With experience in both property development and a carpet cleaning business, he came armed with a unique blend of qualifications for this election. But it wasn’t enough to sway voters this time around.
The turnout in this election brings an air of excitement and engagement among the citizens of Bryan. Ewers-Shurtleff’s win is seen by many as a validation of her existing efforts in office and a vote of confidence in her vision for the city. With all 28 polling precincts reporting, the community cast their votes loudly and clearly, demonstrating their preference for continuity in leadership.
So what’s next for Ewers-Shurtleff? With fresh momentum, she will be tackling the important issues facing the city over the next term. Her experience, coupled with the continuing challenges that come with public office, paints an interesting picture of the road ahead—one that will be watched closely by her supporters and challengers alike.
This local election is a pivotal moment for Bryan, setting the tone for future political endeavors. Citizens continue to engage with their local government, reflecting the importance of participation in shaping their city’s policies. As the dust settles, residents are looking forward to what the upcoming days hold as Ewers-Shurtleff steps into her renewed role on the Bryan City Council, ready to take on fresh challenges and opportunities.
Stay tuned, Bryan! You won’t want to miss what comes next!
