Located within the heart of Calvert, Texas, the Eloia Theatre — an establishment with a rich history tracing back to its inception in 1929 — is expected to host an upcoming show later this fall. The historic venue was recognized as one of the original three movie theaters in downtown Calvert and is now slated to present a theatrical rendition of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, The 39 Steps, running from October 18th to November 3rd.
Harold Maris, the owner of the Eloia Theatre, expressed his optimistic views on what this revival would mean for the city. “ I’m exceedingly proud to own the theater and very excited about the pathways forward and what the future holds“, Maris stated. With hopes of this event sparking further growth and development within the city, the revival of the theatre is seen as a valuable opportunity for locals to witness high-quality, live productions in their hometown.
“The theatre is a significant part of downtown Calvert’s history. Given that it’s the only venue of its kind remaining, it holds a prominent position in Calvert’s timeline,” Maris added. Residents have shared the excitement about this resurgence. One local business owner, Gwen Butler, confessed her love for the progressive developments shaping the city. “The surge of activities within Calvert is extremely exciting, and I am looking forward to seeing more locals acknowledging and exploring Calvert’s abundant history,” Butler said.
Most inhabitants eagerly anticipate the theatre’s reopening. They view this as a robust step towards utilizing the historical resources within the city. The revival is seen not only as a source of entertainment but also as a bonding platform for the community, reinforcing the city’s legacy. “Given the current progress, I foresee a significant transformation in Calvert within the next two years,” Maris confidently projected.
As the city awaits the Eloia Theatre performance, hopes run high that the restoration of the theatre would spur not only an increased interest in arts and culture but also an economic upsurge through the attraction of tourists from across the state and beyond.
