Over three seasons, he managed to play just 18 games, showcasing his potential mainly during a strong freshman year. College Station, Texas – In a surprising turn of events, Texas A&M tight end Donovan Green has made the decision to enter the transfer portal following the conclusion of the 2024 season. This comes after a journey filled with promise, but unfortunately, plagued by injuries that affected his playing time.
Donovan Green’s time with the Aggies was marked by ups and downs. Over the span of three seasons, he played in a total of just 18 games. As a freshman back in 2022, he made a splash with 22 catches for 233 yards and scored two touchdowns. Those touchdowns were nothing short of dramatic, occurring during gripping games against powerhouse teams such as No. 1 Alabama and No. 5 LSU.
However, his potential did not go uninterrupted. The 2023 season was a complete wash for Green as he missed the entire year due to a torn ACL sustained before the regular season kicked off. Sadly, in the past two seasons combined, he was only able to play in two games, putting a damper on what fans hoped would be a spectacular career.
Green came into the Texas A&M program as a hot recruit from Dickinson, Texas. Coming out of high school in the 2022 recruiting class, he was highly sought after, earning a four-star rating. Multiple prestigious programs, like Alabama, Oregon, Georgia, and LSU, among others, sought his talents, but Green ultimately chose to commit to Texas A&M in January 2021, much to the excitement of Aggies fans.
During his freshman year, Green gave fans a glimpse of his potential with notable performances, including a standout moment of three catches for a staggering 50 yards in a gripping 23-21 victory over No. 10 Arkansas. As Green developed over his first year, anticipation grew towards what he could accomplish in the seasons to follow.
With the announcement of Green entering the transfer portal, he became one of many players leaving Texas A&M this season. In total, the Aggies have seen 20 players depart via the transfer portal, a figure that has sent ripples through the fan base.
The Aggies wrapped up the 2024 season with a respectable 8-5 record, but they ended on a sour note when they lost to USC 35-31 in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl on December 27. Following this difficult ending, the team finds itself needing to regroup and reevaluate before next season.
As the Aggies prepare for their future without Green, they will also be saying goodbye to other tight ends. Jaden Platt has committed to Arkansas, while Tre Watson has declared for the NFL Draft, leading to significant changes in the tight end roster.
In efforts to replenish the tight end position, Texas A&M has turned its eyes towards the future, bringing in new talent. They’ve managed to recruit Nate Boerkircher from Nebraska and Micah Riley from Auburn. These new players are expected to add depth and bolster the roster as the team heads into the next season.
