Seeking a place in the annals of baseball history, the No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team showcased an impressive performance, staging a remarkable comeback to defeat Oregon, 10-6, in the first match of the NCAA Bryan-College Station Super Regional. The match took place on Saturday afternoon at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park, College Station, Texas.
Chris Cortez, the hero of the day, delivered a career-high tying 5.2 scoreless innings in relief. The junior’s remarkable stint out of the bullpen saw him strike out a career-best 10 Ducks (40-19) while only allowing two hits. Evan Aschenbeck secured the victory with a remarkable save, striking three out in 1.2 scoreless frames.
Hayden Schott, the graduate student, led the offensive attack for Texas A&M, ending the game with a high three RBI after a 3-for-5 performance at the dish.
After a shaky start which saw the Aggies trailing with a 2-0 deficit due to a two-run homer by Oregon in the first inning, the tide quickly turned. The Aggies swiftly responded with a trio of runs in the bottom half, which saw them overtake Oregon to a 3-2 lead. The switch in fortunes witnessed Jackson Appel score the tying run on a wild pitch, followed by Schott sealing the lead with an RBI double.
Despite Oregon reclaiming the lead in the second inning, the Aggies forces rallied back to take control of the game in the third and fourth innings. A crucial series of errors by Oregon in the fourth inning presented the opportunity for the Aggies to surge forward further, leading 7-6.
The fifth inning saw the Aggies extend their lead to 10-6, with three more runs across the plate, courtesy of the combined efforts from Jace LaViolette, Kaeden Kent, and Appel. Cortez and Aschenbeck synergistically slammed the door shut on Oregon, securing a victory for Texas A&M in game one.
Some notable statistics from the game include a combined haul of 14 strikeouts by the Texas A&M pitching staff. A total of 12 hits and nine walks were registered by the Aggies. Seven different players registered a hit, while six contributed to the walk count.
This game is notable in that it marked the first meeting between Texas A&M and Oregon. With this win, the Aggies improved their all-time Super Regional games record to 13-12. A win in the next game would see them claim their eighth College World Series slot.
The Aggies are expected to pursue their ticket to the College World Series in game two, scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
