COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – Conn’s HomePlus, the renowned furniture and electronics retailing company proudly serving the Southern United States for over 134 years, announced its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week. The retail giant cited slumping sales amidst a wider slump in discretionary spending among consumers as the primary reason for its financial woes.
Despite the somber announcement, loyal customers and employees alike at the Conn’s store situated at the Post Oak Mall in College Station can breathe a sigh of relief – this location is not included in the hefty closure list. The company’s bankruptcy filing has revealed both its assets and liabilities valued at an outstanding billion dollars each, marking a significant financial blow for the seasoned company.
The company plans to close nearly half of its outlets, equating to approximately 73 stores out of its total 170. The stores singled out for closure are primarily dispersed throughout Texas, including locations in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, Texarkana, Wichita Falls, Webster, and Lewisville.
The closure list is currently available for viewing on Conn’s official website. The Conn’s establishment first announced its relocation into the previous Sears building at College Station’s Post Oak Mall in the early days of 2020. There is no current talk of this location being included in the store closure plan.
The furniture and electronics niche, like many business sectors, has bore the harsh brunt of a general slump in discretionary expenditure amidst consumers, which doesn’t ring favorably for the retail giants chez Conn’s. Even so, the College Station store remains steadfast amidst the company’s financial instability, continuing to serve its dedicated clientele and secure jobs for its dedicated local staff.
