Community Comes Together for National Night Out in Bryan

On a warm October evening, the city of Bryan sparkled with excitement as residents gathered at Henderson Park for the annual National Night Out event. This year, the festivities were led by a student organization known as Vikings Kicking Out Tobacco (VKOT), a group dedicated to preventing the use of tobacco and nicotine products among their peers. The initiative not only aims to educate students but to create a healthier community for everyone.

Creating Connections

As people started arriving, the vibe was joyous and welcoming. Faculty advisor and founder of VKOT, Patricia Bailey-Jones — affectionately known as Mrs. PBJ by her students — was thrilled with the turnout. “Anytime there are youth around it’s a great time but tonight gives youth an opportunity to interact with law enforcement and first responders in a more positive manner,” she said with a bright smile. The essence of the evening was to connect neighbors and local heroes in a friendly environment where everyone could feel at ease.

Tasty Treats and Fun Activities

The air was filled with delicious scents as VKOT students served hot dogs, popcorn, and iced tea while an ice cream truck rolled in to provide a sweet treat for the attendees. Kids were seen indulging in face painting, overseen by Bryan High’s cosmetology class, adding splashes of color to the festivities. The evening was not just about delicious food and fun; it also featured various games, where youngsters could win exciting prizes along the way.

A Positive Perspective on Law Enforcement

It was heartening to see local law enforcement officers mingling with the community, exchanging smiles and shaking hands. Police officer Seth Waller pointed out how good it was to get to know the youth in a relaxed setting. “For us to come out and shake their hands and see these kids playing, it gives an opportunity for these kids to meet officers who are not necessarily their school resource officer,” he explained. This kind of interaction fosters a sense of trust and openness between the police and the kids.

A Showcase of Talent

The evening didn’t fall short of entertainment either. Bryan ISD’s Ballet Folklórico Los Altos de Jalisco wowed attendees with vibrant performances that highlighted cultural heritage. This added a layer of diversity and celebration of local talent to the event. “These are students leading students,” commented Bryan ISD Superintendent Ginger Carrabine, applauding the spirit of community service on display.

The Importance of Awareness

VKOT president, Gabriela Garcia, emphasized the significance of the event’s aim. “We want to inform people about the dangers of tobacco and nicotine. It’s essential for kids to have fun while learning,” she said. With this message, the students realized that they were not just providing an evening of entertainment but playing a crucial role in educating their peers about a healthier lifestyle.

A Tradition That Grows

National Night Out has been a cherished tradition since it began in 1984, evolving from 400 communities in 23 states to an astounding participation of 3,900 cities nationwide today. Texas stands out with 408 cities participating, including Bryan and College Station. As the night progressed, everyone could feel the community spirit wholeheartedly saying, “Let’s keep making memories and connections.”

Looking Forward

After such a successful event, it’s safe to say that VKOT will already be planning for next year’s National Night Out, which falls on October 7, 2025. As the lights dimmed and laughter rang through the park, the community was left with memories that will surely echo until the next gathering.
