Community members come together to honor the spirit of volunteerism.
College Station celebrates volunteer Chris Allen, who has been awarded the Daily Point of Light Award No. 8037 for his remarkable contributions to the community. Dedicating over 1,100 hours in 2024 alone at the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum, Allen exemplifies the spirit of service. His commitment to preserving history and engaging the community sets a profound example for others. The award will be presented on April 1, 2025, highlighting the impact of volunteerism.
In a heartwarming celebration of community spirit, College Station is buzzing with excitement as local volunteer Chris Allen has been honored with the esteemed Daily Point of Light Award No. 8037. This recognition will be officially presented on April 1, 2025, and it’s part of a tradition that aims to shine a light on individuals making significant contributions through service and civic engagement.
Allen is not your average volunteer; he dedicates a staggering 15 hours each week to supporting the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum right in the heart of College Station, Texas. His tireless efforts as a docent are commendable, as he leads special tours for VIPs and provides valuable assistance during community events. Allen’s work doesn’t stop there—he jumps behind the scenes to help in the library’s audiovisual department, ensuring that the rich history preserved within the library is accessible to everyone.
In 2024 alone, Chris logged over 1,100 volunteer hours, earning him the title of the library’s top volunteer of the year. His commitment exemplifies what the Daily Point of Light Award signifies, mirroring the vision of the late President George H.W. Bush, who encouraged citizens to be a “Point of Light” in their communities. Chris’s dedication has been recognized by the library’s Volunteer Coordinator, who highlighted his service as an embodiment of this ideal.
Before becoming a passionate volunteer, Allen served in the U.S. Air Force, working primarily as a photographer. His distinguished career included time spent with the White House Communications Agency (WHCA) during the Bush/Quayle administration in the early ’90s. During this time, he captured pivotal moments in history by processing film, creating contact sheets, and printing photographs that vividly documented the daily activities of President George H.W. Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle.
After retiring from a fulfilling career in nonprofit fundraising in 2023, Chris decided to volunteer full-time at the Bush Library. One of his monumental achievements is the digitization of nearly 170 binders from the Bush/Quayle White House Photo Office. This massive project preserved over 16,600 contact sheets for public access, essentially opening the door to a treasure trove of historical research and ensuring that the stories of the past are easily accessible to future generations.
The Daily Point of Light Award has a rich history, originally established by President George H.W. Bush to honor individuals who actively support causes that matter to them. This award is granted five days a week to recognize those sparking meaningful change in their communities. Over the years, the program has honored more than 8,000 remarkable recipients, stemming from Bush’s original initiative that awarded a total of 1,020 Daily Point of Light Awards during his time in office. It represents a powerful legacy of service and a reminder that each person’s efforts can bring about positive change.
As College Station prepares to honor Chris Allen with the Daily Point of Light Award, it’s a moment for all of us to reflect on the importance of volunteerism and serving our communities. Chris’s story exemplifies how one person’s dedication can enhance the lives of many and underscores the vibrancy of volunteer work in our society. Congratulations to Chris, a true beacon of light for College Station!
