In the heart of College Station, Texas, the local police department is stepping up its game in a big way! The College Station Police Victim Services Department has doubled its staff this year, bringing in a second position for the first time since its inception in 2004. This move comes as a response to the growing population and the critical need for improved access to mental health services, allowing the department to reach even more victims of crime.
The dedicated team is now led by Crime Victim Liaison Annalee Hugo, who is excited to welcome Sarah Clamp into the fold. Together, these two compassionate professionals are on a mission to provide support and assistance to survivors of crime in their community. “Before we added this position, it was just me managing all the needs of victims, and with the rapid growth in our population, it was becoming a challenge,” shared Hugo. “Now, thanks to Sarah’s help, we are able to serve more people and reach those affected by a wider range of offenses.”
Just last year alone, Hugo and Clamp made contact with more than 509 survivors. That’s an impressive number, reflecting their commitment to supporting those going through some of the toughest times in their lives. “For many, these are their worst days,” Clamp explained. “So providing a little bit of kindness, empathy, and a safe space to discuss their experiences is crucial.”
With October being recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, both Hugo and Clamp emphasize that the importance of raising awareness cannot be underestimated. “Domestic violence often thrives on silence,” Clamp pointed out. “Many victims live in fear of speaking out because it can be extremely dangerous for them. We want our community to understand this, and that’s why ongoing awareness is essential.”
But their roles don’t end with just supporting victims! Hugo and Clamp also act as peer support for the brave officers and city staff of College Station. “We collaborate with all our detectives and crime scene officers—all the first responders,” Hugo explained. “They deal with tragedies day in and day out, and it’s important for them to have an outlet to express their feelings. Our team offers that space, letting them know they’re human and it’s okay to talk about what they’re going through.”
As the College Station community continues to grow and its needs evolve, the Victim Services Department remains dedicated to reaching as many individuals as possible. They are committed to being there for survivors and ensuring that no one feels alone in their journey. If you’re seeking more information on victim rights or how you can get involved, you can reach out via email or call their program at (979) 764-2642.
With the expansion of the Victim Services Department in College Station, the future looks brighter for many survivors. Hugo and Clamp’s dedication and compassion will surely continue to make a significant impact in their community, fostering hope and healing for those in need. Let’s support them in any way we can, spreading awareness and compassion together!
