Hello, College Station! There are some exciting and important updates for our lovely community that you won’t want to miss. From road improvements to updates on local law enforcement, we’ve got it all covered!
First up, let’s talk about roads! If you’ve driven down Penberthy Road recently, you might have noticed some construction activity. That’s because Texas A&M University is taking steps to widen this busy road. The university’s chief operating officer, Peter Lange, has shared that the main goal of this project is to ease the congestion that’s expected in the area once construction begins on the new interchange at George Bush Drive and Wellborn Road.
What’s even better is that not only will they be adding an extra lane for vehicles, but the project will also include a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists. Isn’t that great news? Peter Lange has emphasized the importance of finishing this project before the George Bush/Wellborn construction starts, so we can all enjoy smoother commutes and safer travel on foot and by bike!
Switching gears, let’s hear from our local government! College Station’s Mayor John Nichols recently took the time to address several community issues. In a recent chat with a local radio host, he spoke about a tragic incident involving a pedestrian and a garbage truck. Mayor Nichols expressed the city’s commitment to improving safety measures to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.
During this conversation, he also highlighted the Texas Municipal League conference he attended and discussed the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event. This event is a great opportunity for residents to clean up around the house while responsibly disposing of unwanted hazardous materials. It’s a win-win for our community and our environment!
It’s a bit puzzling, to say the least, and this isn’t his first run-in with the law! Mcafee had previously been arrested for a similar incident earlier this year. As of now, he remains in jail with a bond set at $2,000.
On a more positive note, the Bryan Police Department has just announced a promotion that highlights the hard work and dedication of its officers. Walt Melnyk, a 25-year veteran of the force, has been promoted to assistant chief of the department’s investigative services bureau. This is a significant role, especially after the department experienced a leadership change in June with the promotion of Dean Swartzlander to chief.
Melnyk has worked in various capacities over his career, from public information officer to crime prevention officer, so he brings a wealth of experience to his new position. There’s no doubt he will make a positive impact moving forward!
As we continue to watch these developments in College Station, it’s heartening to see that our community is growing. From road improvements that facilitate easier travel to proactive measures by our local government and dedicated law enforcement, there’s a lot to look forward to. Stay tuned for more updates and, as always, let’s keep looking out for one another!
