As the charming city of College Station buzzes with the vibrant energy of students and locals alike, an exciting yet controversial proposal is stirring conversations. With Texas A&M football lighting up the rankings at No. 10 this season, it’s no surprise that the influx of fans and students is causing a bit of a traffic jam in the area. The well-known 12th Man spirit is alive and kicking, but along with that enthusiasm comes the essential question: How do we manage the traffic woes that come with so many people on the move?
If you’ve ever found yourself sitting in traffic around campus, you know the struggle of getting from point A to point B. Sure, the bus system runs, and it’s functional — yet, with rapidly increasing enrollment numbers at A&M, that simply might not be enough. As students either choose to drive or hop on a scooter, the roads become ever more crowded, leading to delays that can challenge even the most patient among us.
Recently, A&M’s administration put forth a rather futuristic solution to the traffic problem: a series of underground one-lane tunnels designed to whisk students from one busy area of campus to another in electric vehicles. Sounds a bit like something out of a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it? Students would step into these vehicles at designated “subway stations,” ride to their destination, and voilà! They’ve avoided the clogged campus roads. But while the concept is innovative, questions loom concerning its feasibility and effectiveness.
Many are already raising eyebrows at the thought of using Elon Musk’s The Boring Company to carry out the project, given their spotty track record with similar ventures. Take the Las Vegas Loop, for example. It’s about 1.7 miles of underground tunnel that aimed to revolutionize transit but ended up being more of a flashy tech showcase with not-so-ideal outcomes. The route may have been built in just a year, but it cost a staggering $47 million, and once it opened its doors, traffic snarls were still a common sight due to the single lane. If something went wrong, the whole operation risked being halted.
So, is this the kind of system College Station wants? Are we ready to put our faith in a transportation method that hasn’t proven its worth in other locations? Moreover, one can’t help but wonder: Does A&M have a cool $47 million to spare on a wishful project, particularly when there’s already an existing transit system that has room for improvement?
Instead of constructing a trendy tunnel, why not expand the existing bus system? Adding a few new buses could be done at a fraction of the cost — approximately $500,000 per bus and an operational cost of roughly $68.30 per hour. Imagine increasing bus frequency and reliability! Quick calculations reveal that adding 25 more buses for ten years would actually cost less than creating this tunnel system. Who knew that solving congestion might be this straightforward?
At the end of the day, the key question remains: Should aesthetics be prioritized above functionality? As appealing as the idea of sleek underground tunnels is, the tried-and-true bus system already has a foundation — and it works. While some buses may not win any beauty contests, they accomplish their job efficiently. The novelty of riding in a tunnel may fade fast if it leads to missed classes and perpetual delays.
As College Station ramps up to tackle its growing traffic congestion with some intriguing ideas, it’s clear that the community is ready for change. Whether it’s improving our bus services or venturing into the world of underground transit, the focus should remain on providing a solution that works for everyone. After all, while we can appreciate innovation, practicality is what will keep students moving smoothly to class. Here’s hoping for a future where students can navigate their way around campus without a hitch!
