College Station braces for traffic disruptions due to multiple road closures and construction projects. Notable closures include Krenek Tap Road for a gas line replacement and Lincoln Avenue for water line installation, impacting local traffic until January 2025. Additionally, upcoming lane closures from TxDOT are set for May. Residents are advised to prepare for detours and changes while local authorities address road safety concerns. Amid the disruptions, the community will operate a warming center and recently hosted a historic concert by George Strait.
The bustling city of College Station is gearing up for some major traffic disruptions as multiple road closures and construction projects kick into high gear. So grab your maps and be ready for some detours!
Starting this Wednesday, January 8, a portion of Krenek Tap Road will be closed off from Texas Avenue to Dartmouth Street. This closure is necessary for a significant gas line replacement project by Atmos, which aims to improve safety and reliability. But don’t worry! The anticipated disruption is expected to last just until January 16, when the work should be fully wrapped up.
Throughout this period, detours will be in place to help guide drivers around the closure. Plus, residents living nearby will still have access to their homes, so they’ll be able to come and go as needed. The College Station Municipal Court and Utility Customer Service will continue to be accessible via Texas Avenue, ensuring that vital services are uninterrupted during this construction.
As if that wasn’t enough, another road, Lincoln Avenue, was closed just the day before on January 7. This closure, which affects traffic between Texas Avenue and Tarrow Street, is a response to numerous complaints regarding potholes and dangerous road conditions. It seems that all the construction work has created some significant issues, leading to this latest decision.
The ongoing construction on Lincoln Avenue includes the installation of a new water line, with hopes to have everything finished by mid-fall of 2025. Project Manager Raquel Gonzales explained that this closure is intended to expedite the work progress after several months of delays and setbacks.
On the horizon, the Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT for short, has announced two major traffic advisories for the Bryan district that might throw a wrench into travel plans. Mark your calendars for May 19 and 20, as there will be lane closures at the intersection of Wellborn Road and George Bush Drive. This will be due to essential soil testing scheduled for those days.
The changes continue on May 21, when drivers should be prepared for traffic adjustments on Harvey Mitchell Parkway (FM 2818). Existing crossovers will be closed, but the good news is new signalized median u-turn lanes are set to open, and the final traffic configuration should be all settled by the morning of May 31.
The community is not only facing road issues. Brazos County Commissioner Wanda Watson has voiced concerns over lingering problems for residents of Southgate Village apartments, specifically regarding natural gas line repairs that have yet to be resolved.
As colder temperatures settle in, a warming center will be operational from January 8 to January 9 at Bryan’s First United Methodist Church. This center is set up to help those in need during these chilling subfreezing days, offering shelter and resources.
On a brighter note, College Station recently welcomed music legend George Strait for a groundbreaking concert at Kyle Field, marking the first-ever concert at this iconic venue. The event, which took place on Saturday night, drew enormous crowds and inevitably led to some traffic jams. Strait wasn’t alone on stage, as he was supported by talented artists Parker McCollum and Catie Offerman, making it a night to remember.
With all this hustle and bustle, residents are sure to keep their eyes peeled for updates about road conditions and local happenings. College Station is certainly making waves—both in the world of construction and live music!
