As students at Texas A&M University go about their busy schedules, one of the less talked-about topics that comes up is the fate of movie theaters. It seems that the classic cinema experience is undergoing some modern-day scrutiny. The Texas A&M men’s golf team may be off competing in the inaugural Qubein Cup this week in Greensboro, North Carolina, but on campus, students are examining whether catching a flick in theaters still holds appeal.
Throughout my time at Texas A&M, I have chatted with plenty of fellow Aggies and discovered a surprising trend: many of them have a strong aversion to stepping foot in a movie theater. Curiously, I set out to explore this phenomenon by polling over three dozen students about their experiences with cinema. The results were eye-opening! Almost a third of respondents admitted they had never even set foot in a movie theater. Can you believe that?
For the two-thirds who do indulge in the theater experience, their primary reasons were to hang out with friends and to seek some good old-fashioned entertainment. But on the flip side, many of those who steer clear of theaters cited budget concerns and a lack of interest in new releases as their main reasons for not attending. It seems there’s a distinct divide, with only six out of forty responding positively about their affection for movie theaters.
The rise of streaming services presents a conundrum for movie theaters. While rising ticket and concession prices are pushing many to opt for cozy movie-watching at home, streaming services themselves are continuously upping their prices. Quite the paradox! Students have mentioned spending anywhere from $60 to $200 a month on various streaming platforms.
For those still interested in theater-going, there’s some good news! Most local theaters in the Bryan-College Station area do offer reduced prices for students. For example, Star Cinema Grill charges only $8 per ticket—a steal in today’s ticket market!
However, it’s crucial to consider the social component behind this trend. Many students have noted that they prefer the company of friends when opting for theater visits. This leads to the question—why are college students so dependent on their buddies to experience the thrill of a movie?
The pandemic surely left a mark on social interactions. When lockdowns forced many of us to stay indoors, it created a shift in how relationships and group dynamics function for our generation. Social interaction, a fundamental part of our nature, feels amplified these days, and many seem hesitant to embark on activities alone.
This group mentality prevents people from making individual choices, such as visiting a movie theater solo. We’ve become accustomed to enjoying group activities, jumping on the bandwagon of what our friendships dictate. If your friends are not interested in the latest blockbuster, it can feel socially daunting to brave the theater alone.
This naturally raises the question—are we witnessing the beginning of the end for movie theaters? Not if they can help it! Some cinema chains have begun innovating to draw in audiences by creating a more vibrant and interactive space. For instance, Cinemark is adding arcades, and Regal Cinemas offers unique experiences such as 4DX, which offers roller-coaster-like thrill rides during films.
Interestingly, going to the movies alone can be quite the liberating experience. There’s something peaceful about enjoying a film without the sway of anyone else’s opinion. So why not take a chance and venture out by yourself? After all, while a group can enhance the fun, savoring a must-see film on your own is not as torturous as you might think. There’s a certain joy in watching what you love, free from the influence of others.
As technology evolves and social habits change, theaters are at a crossroads. They’ve got some tough competition from streaming options, but the cinema offers a unique experience that is difficult to replicate. Movie theaters may just need a little creativity to welcome a new audience while also encouraging individuals to indulge in cinema solo. So go ahead—grab some popcorn, even if it’s just for yourself—and let the cinematic magic sweep you away!
