College Station’s Mayor Pleads with Brazos County for Additional Funding for Greens Prairie Road Widening

Mayor John Nichols Calls for Additional Funding

Mayor John Nichols, the driving force behind the College Station city council, issued a fresh plea on June 13, 2024, for more funds to accommodate the widening of Greens Prairie Road- a project primarily situated within Brazos County. Two years ago, the County lent a helping hand to the city by donating $4.2 million, allowing the City to take the wheel on the construction endeavor. However, the project is now situated at a crossroads with escalating costs.

Current Estimated Project Budget

The initial estimated budget for the Greens Prairie Road project stands at $6.3 million, a figure that Mayor John Nichols warns will continue to rise without additional support from the county. To that end, Nichols made an earnest request for more monetary aid to Bryan Woods, the city manager, during June’s 13th council meeting. The widening of Greens Prairie Road will not commence construction for a minimum of 18 months, with the city only having started the acquisition of the right of way recently.

The Stance of the County Commission

The Brazos County Commission convened twice following the mayor’s plea, with meetings taking place on June 18th and June 25th. Despite Mayor Nichol’s urgent request, seeking additional funding for the transportation project wasn’t raised during either of these commission meetings. The navigating of this financial hurdle is yet to be seen, keeping the future of the Greens Prairie Road project in the realm of uncertainty for the time being.

The cyclist in question, 37 years old Ennis Steels IV, weaved over medians of Texas Avenue before ditching his bicycle and attempting to flee on foot. However, his daring escape was thwarted by law enforcement, landing him with new charges and a bail of $160,000.
