In College Station, Texas, homeowners are feeling a bit of anxiety these days as Progressive Insurance has announced a temporary pullout from the state when it comes to writing and renewing homeowner’s insurance policies. This shift, which has the potential to leave many residents scratching their heads, has raised questions about what alternatives are out there for securing coverage.
According to Tricia Griffith, CEO of Progressive, the decision is rooted in the need to reduce their exposure to weather-related volatility. In a candid letter to shareholders, she explained, “Reducing the impact from weather-related volatility is strategically important, and shifting our geographic mix continues to be a top priority.” Griffith asserted that they’re focusing on states with lower “weather risk,” while trying to cut back in places that have a higher chance of experiencing catastrophic weather events.
Interestingly, a recent report revealed that Texas accounted for a staggering 40% of Progressive’s storm losses in just the second quarter of this year. With Hurricane Beryl wreaking havoc along the Texas coast just weeks before these changes kicked in on August 13, it’s no wonder Progressive felt the need to take such measures. Other states like Florida and Colorado also contributed but to a lesser extent.
For homeowners, the impact of this decision may not be fully clear just yet. Progressive was considered the eighth largest homeowner’s insurance carrier in Texas last year, holding about 2.52% of the market share. However, recent records indicate that they faced combined losses totaling around $686 million on homeowners’ policies in 2023. That’s quite a hit!
Even though the future of Progressive’s homeowner policies in Texas is uncertain, a spokesperson assured that they remain committed to their presence in the property business and expect to rebound. “We are temporarily restricting new homeowners (HO3) business for certain agents in several states including Texas,” they said, emphasizing that other lines such as auto and commercial lines will not be impacted.
At the local level, agencies like Dean and Draper in College Station are feeling the repercussions of this change. According to Sara McNeill, a personal line account manager at the agency, the withdrawal has left many clients anxious about losing their coverage. “It’s put people in a pretty big bind just because of nonrenewals. We’ve got to find coverage elsewhere,” she told us, expressing concern for homeowners who might feel stranded without insurance.
McNeill also pointed out that Progressive isn’t the only insurance company pulling out. Several carriers such as Farmers and Encompass have also made similar moves over the past years, often in response to rising claims and costs driven by severe weather and inflation. “Insurance rates have skyrocketed, ranging anywhere from 30% to 80% increases,” she highlighted.
In this challenging landscape, McNeill suggests that all homeowners take a proactive approach. “It’s always a good idea to shop around for insurance every year, no matter what provider you have,” she advised. Checking premiums and thoroughly reviewing policies can help homeowners find the best coverage for their needs.
Remember, if you’re in a region prone to catastrophic weather events, it’s wise to stay informed about your options. “Talk to an agent. They’ll be able to walk you through everything, break down those coverages,” McNeill concluded, reminding the community to always stay proactive and aware.
While the temporary exit of Progressive from the homeowner insurance market in Texas has caused a stir, the local community still has choices available. By exploring these options and remaining vigilant, homeowners can navigate this tricky situation together. After all, peace of mind when it comes to home insurance is invaluable!
