College Station Girls Basketball Shines in Opening District Game

In the bustling city of College Station, the community has something to cheer about as the Lady Cougars kicked off their District 17-5A campaign with a bang on Tuesday night! The atmosphere at Cougar Gym was electric as the local girls’ basketball team enjoyed a solid 56-43 victory over their rivals, the Brenham Cubettes.

Defensive Dominance

The game was all about defense for the Lady Cougars, who had Brenham locked down like a drum. The Cubettes really struggled, shooting just 28% from the floor, with only 12 field goals made throughout the match. To add to their woes, they turned the ball over a whopping 21 times. The Lady Cougars’ defense turned the heat up, especially in the second and fourth quarters, where they held Brenham to a dismal 3 of 22 from the field!

College Station head coach Shawnte’ Goff acknowledged the turning point, saying, “In those last two minutes in the second quarter, we decided to pick up our intensity on defense, and then the shots started falling.” The Lady Cougars indeed found their groove, just in time to take a sliver of momentum into halftime.

Sparking the Offense

Before halftime, the Lady Cougars had faced a few bumps, including foul troubles and difficulties with Brenham’s offensive rebounds. At one point, the Cubettes even grasped their first lead at 18-17. However, College Station fought back, closing the half with a 10-4 scoring spurt. This late-half surge was capped off by an exciting play from freshman guard Ja’mya Johnson. She intercepted a half-hearted pass and, in a dazzling display, spun to her right to lay one in—getting the foul in the process!

“I think her effort and intensity just bring a spark every time she’s on the floor. She’s genuinely fun to watch,” Coach Goff said with pride.

A Star is Born

Meanwhile, sophomore forward Taylor Cornehl proved to be a game-changer. She showcased her talents with a dominant performance, scoring a game-high 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. “Her game has really elevated since last year, and I’m excited to see how much she blossoms by the end of the season,” Goff added.

It wasn’t all about Cornehl, though. Junior guard Tearra Burleson10 points, five rebounds, and four steals, all while helping her team get into scoring position. “She is invaluable to our gameplan,” Goff remarked. “She never comes off the floor and really puts everyone in the right places.”

Turning the Tide

As the game progressed into the second half, the Lady Cougars found their rhythm from beyond the arc. They drilled three crucial 3-pointers, with Cornehl leading the charge. A sense of assurance washed over the crowd as they saw their team increase its lead to 40-27.

Even when Brenham fought back, narrowing the gap to 47-39 early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Cougars unleashed an 8-0 run that put the game firmly in their control.

Looking Ahead

This victory marks not just a pivotal win but also the sixth consecutive triumph for the College Station squad, who have already surpassed last year’s win total of 10. The Lady Cougars are on fire and will look to keep the momentum going as they prepare to face Montgomery (14-3, 1-0) at 6:30 p.m. this Friday!
