College Station City Council greenlights revised Master Plan for Texas Independence Park
The City Council of College Station has given the approval to move forward on a revised master plan for Texas Independence Park. Valued at approximately $21 million, the new plan focusses on repurposing the area initially intended for a baseball field complex.
Bad Soil Quality and New Directives
Due to bad soil quality detected off Rock Prairie Road, the council unanimously approved the revised master plan that now sees a shift in park usage. The priority now focusses more on passive uses, as Kelsey Heiden, the Director of Parks and Recreation described.
New Additions and Key Features
The newly-approved master plan for the Texas Independence Park includes several new additions. The first 18-hole disc golf course in College Station is the highlight of the park’s revision.
In addition to this, the park will feature a network of walking and biking trails, a fishing pond, and sufficient green space for pickup games. The park is also planned to introduce what Heiden described as a “destination play experience.”
The City Council directed staff to solicit proposals to finalize designs that were developed by an outside company and by students at Texas A&M, reflecting the public’s input.
Future Decision-Making and Construction Plans
The City Council’s approval of the revised master plan comes at a crucial time. The park’s restroom construction is nearing its completion phase, marking the beginning of actualizing the master plan.
Yet, funding sources and the scheduling for constructing these different park features remain a matter of discussion. The council and staff will have to make these important decisions in the future.
