College Station’s Knowledge Based Systems, Inc Acknowledged for Notable Contributions to Technology and Security

COLLEGE STATION, Texas

Knowledge Based Systems, Inc. (KBSI), a local technology company based in College Station, Texas, has been awarded Small Business Subcontractor of the Year 2024 by the U.S. Small Business Administration. This award recognizes KBSI’s remarkable achievements in the realms of technology, security, and programming, which are utilized by various U.S. agencies, from the Air Force to Homeland Security.

An Industry Player for Over Three Decades

In 1988, Richard Mayer founded KBSI in his garage with a humble Mac Plus. Over 36 years later, that same computer is now showcased in the KBSI headquarters, a symbol of perseverance and tenacious innovation. “We’ve done a lot of work in the bio-security area,” recalls Mayer proudly. “If our soldiers fight with it, we have probably engineered the processes to repair it.”

Cutting-Edge Innovation from College Station

Over the years, KBSI has become a national leader in cybersecurity software research, development, and system analysis. Shawn Reynolds, Vice President of IT at KBSI, describes their 20 ft by 10 ft portable data center as capable of performing “high-capacity research and high-performance computing”.

KBSI is perhaps most renowned for developing the ASSURANT tool, a software used by thousands in the U.S. Air Force to secure their weapons systems from possible cyber threats.

Local Company Reaches National Acclaim

Thanks to its outstanding contributions to the fields of technology and cybersecurity, KBSI was nominated for recognition by BAE Systems, a company that KBSI had subcontracted for in the past. After winning Small Business Subcontractor of the Year for Region 6, the South Central Region, KBSI earned national recognition by bagging the National Subcontractor of the Year award.

When Mayer received the news, he was shocked and humbled. “Getting some National recognition is really great for a small company out of College Station,” beamed Reynolds.

This acknowledgment by the U.S. Small Business Administration propels KBSI to the forefront of the technology and cybersecurity industry. Even more impressive, it further illustrates how a small business from College Station, Texas, can make waves on a national stage.
