College Station Celebrates a Magical Weekend of Fandoms

In the heart of College Station, a vibrant weekend filled with creativity and passion brought together fans from all walks of life. From September 14 to 16, enthusiasts gathered for the first-ever College Station Comic Con, transforming the Brazos County Expo Center into a lively hub brimming with excitement and imagination.

A Stellar Comeback for Texas A&M Soccer

Before diving into the colorful world of cosplay, let’s give a shout out to the Texas A&M soccer team, who made headlines recently. After a tough loss at UConn on September 15, they sweetly rebounded with a thrilling 1-0 win against Columbia, Missouri on Thursday. The team is back on track, proving that sports, much like fandoms, are all about resilience and celebrating victories.

The Magic of the Mixing of Fandoms

As the lights dimmed at the expo center, eager attendees streamed into the venue, ready to explore every nook and cranny of the convention. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as guests engaged in animated conversations over their favorite shows, movies, and games. Rob Malloy, a vendor selling Dungeons and Dragons merchandise, radiated enthusiasm as he showcased his custom-made Texas A&M-themed Mandalorian costume. “It’s our first year doing this!” he exclaimed. “We’ve done AggieCon a few times and decided it’s time to dive into more gaming cons.”

This event was not just about commerce; it was about community. Rob, who has been a game master since the 1980s, shared wisdom gained from decades in the gaming world: “You learn how to deal with failure…and always pass that onto the next generation,” he noted. His passion for diversity in gaming is evident as he embraces everyone who walks through the doors of these conventions.

Crafting Dreams into Reality

Among the dazzling costumes was Cosplay Meg, who had spent nine years honing her skills in costuming. She reminisced about her humble beginnings at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, where her mother gifted her a sewing machine. “It’s been a long journey from piecing things together to patterning and crafting from scratch,” Meg reflected. Her talent shines not just through her costumes, but as she uses her skills for a greater good by volunteering for charities like The 501st Legion and Mando-Mercs.

However, the path of a cosplayer isn’t always smooth. Meg bravely shared experiences of facing judgments within the community. “I will always encourage people to let comments roll off their back, but it still hurts,” she admitted. Thankfully, she emphasized the positivity from body-positive communities keeps her motivation alive.

Voices of the Future

Not only were there stunning costumes, but captivating conversations filled the expo with a lineup of professional voice actors. Katelyn Barr, known for her anime dubbing talents, was among the guests. She shared insights about the competitive world of voice acting, encouraging aspiring actors to take improv classes to prepare for the unexpected. “You almost never get the script in advance,” she mentioned. “Any amount of improv classes will help tremendously.”

Barr also underscored the importance of having hobbies alongside pursuing your dreams. “If you do the job you love, then you’re never clocking out,” she said, inspiring many with her perspective on work-life balance.

Community at its Core

In a nutshell, College Station Comic Con has emerged as a blossoming event that illustrates the essence of community. Whether through gaming, cosplay, or voice acting, there’s a shared understanding that it’s about **coming together**, embracing differences, and just enjoying the magic of fandoms. Nursing the creative spirits, this wholesome gathering allowed many to escape reality, just like a well-spun, fantastical yarn in a beloved novel or game.

Like Texas A&M soccer’s winning spirits, fans from all walks of life left the convention feeling uplifted and inspired. Isn’t it amazing how a weekend of shared passions can spark new connections, ideas, and hopefully, next year’s comic con excitement?
