Excitement in College Station: The Coffeehouse Experience

College Station is buzzing with excitement as the Texas A&M equestrian team prepares for its first road matchup of the season. On Friday morning, the No. 2 ranked team is heading to Felton, Delaware, to face off against No. 9 Delaware State. Fans are eager to see how the team performs on the road, and it’s clear that the spirit of competition is alive and well among the Aggie community. But amidst all this sporty excitement, there’s another event that is capturing the hearts of students right here at home.

Coffeehouse: A Hub of Talent and Community

Every other Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m., the relaxation space outside of the Innovative Learning Classroom Building (ILCB) transforms into a vibrant coffee shop atmosphere. This gathering is known as Coffeehouse, a free event where student artists showcase their talents. As part of MSC Town Hall’s student performer concert series, Coffeehouse has become a staple for those looking to celebrate creativity.

The event has become a platform for both new and returning artists, offering them a chance to connect with an audience eager for original songs and covers. According to Jillian Weeks, a communication senior and MSC Town Hall Vice President, “We get lots of different genres, sometimes groups, but usually solo artists.” Interestingly, the original idea for Coffeehouse came from renowned country singer Lyle Lovett during his time at A&M. What began as the “Basement Committee” has evolved, merging with MSC Town Hall to create the cozy gathering we know today.

Creating Connections Through Music and Community

This unique event is not just about music; it’s also about building connections. Each Wednesday, attendees can enjoy free coffee and snacks, making it an inviting space for both artists and spectators. As the weather warms, iced coffee is also available, adding a refreshing twist to the experience. “That’s what makes Coffeehouse unique,” Weeks explains. “It’s not just artists, but it’s also a place for people to hang out.”

This past October 3, Nathan Snyder, a general engineering freshman, made his debut visit to Coffeehouse after hearing about the free music and coffee. He remarked, “It’s an amazing opportunity for musicians who haven’t had much of a chance to get out there yet. It’s a great start for them.”

Another freshman, Blessing Inyi, echoed similar sentiments. After observing the event from afar for a while, she finally joined in on the fun. “I think it’s really nice how they made a vibe of an actual coffeehouse,” she said. “You’re listening to music, but you can also see other people talking and hanging out — and I just think it’s really cool that they made it available.”

A Platform for Emerging Talent

For those interested in performing, MSC Town Hall has made it easy to get involved. A Linktree on their Instagram page, @msctownhall, provides a link to an interest form, allowing aspiring artists to submit a video showcasing their talent. This straightforward process helps ensure that local talent gets the spotlight it deserves.

Weeks summed it up lovely, “The purpose is to bring entertainment to Aggieland — which is our purpose as a committee as a whole. This event, in particular, gives a platform to smaller artists, gives them their start, a place to perform, and a place to show off what they do.”
